I don't know about that.

The best I can say is that I enjoy watching people and I'm a linear logic person...so I paid attention to what succeeded and failed in my local community.

For all I know the OP could be brilliant, but we'll never know because his approach is to essentially walk into cocktail party, then stand on the piano and lecture everyone in the room without knowing anything about them.

Again, I don;t think that's what was up, here, but you may be right.

The piano thing CAN work and *has* worked for some people, but those people had 'performance art' experience and had more of the 'X-Factor'.

Yeah, well, if you were able to make that gif yourself, the humour would have carried... the weight of the bricks.

The OP bears responsibility for how he presented this subject for discussion, but... don't others bear any responsibility for how they responded? This could have been a real discussion. If it was turned into an opportunity to criticise and make fun, then we're all worse off for it.

I disagree. The OP never presented this as a discussion, he presented it as a lecture..and I don't think it's up to the recipients of the lecture to turn it into a discussion.

He did present it as a lecture. At that point, posters had a choice: to respond to the ideas being presented or to respond to the manner of their presentation. Most chose the latter (in my opinion, to the detriment of the thread). While posters do not have the responsibility to turn a lecture into a discussion, they do at least have the responsibility not to derail threads because they don't like their content, or because they don't like the way that content was presented.

It would be just as easy to post elsewhere if you thought the OP had no merit. Many of the responses had far less merit still. I think that's ironic. I'm simply asking posters to recognise that the way they choose to respond (what they focus on, what they ignore) has as much to do with the quality of a thread as the OP itself.

That said, I suppose I'm derailing the thread myself, now, so I'll piss off unless I can find something to say on topic.

I think OP got exactly what he subconsciously wanted out of this thread. He's trying to tell himself he has NPD, but there's no easy way for your subconscious to do that.

So, lack of empathy is a big part of NPD, but can someone have NPD if they actually have loads of empathy but fit the rest of it well?

Ser, that would fall under the purview of Dual-Diagnosis. technically the answer is "yes".

"The OP bears responsibility for how he presented this subject for discussion, but... don't others bear any responsibility for how they responded? This could have been a real discussion. If it was turned into an opportunity to criticise and make fun, then we're all worse off for it. "

you left out the chance that he might of been 'mining' the thread for a third option as has been stated, and this kind of behaviour has been done befoe, sometimes at tax payer expense. generally by Gen Y 'no cock/no clit/no work ethic sheisters. The OP is older than that but none-the-less. Your reaction presumes that the OP had sincere intentions, and frankly, there is no evidence of that, and his behaviour in fact points to the contrary.

So, like Narcissistic Personality Disorder combined with Hyperactive Empathy Disorder? ;)

No, not really. Because in that case the person you mention above would never care about what a Data Mining Tapeworm would feel, based on the fact that data mining tapeworms and NCP and BCPD only feel a limited range of "gimme" and "I want" and "let me feel clever by conning you", whereas the combination person you mentioned would actually give a shit about what you/Ser might like, and want to protect others from having their own feelings hurt by a lame-ass wannabe guru, even if there was nothing in it for the 'combination person' as you describe above.

sadly sometimes the bullhorn is the only method of removing pick-pockets from a crowd. If an NPD person uses a bullhorn, and an empathic person who has caught out NPDs uses a bullhorn, the use of a bullhorn is lame-ass syllogism, if you say that using a bullhorn thereby means "NPD" stuff.

the rhinovirus gives you a sneeze, the influenza virus gives you a sneeze, they have jack shit to do with each other and are separate animals

Not to mention alkalis and acids. you must use one to offset and stop the (medically dangerous) heart burn caused by the other.

even though both ends of the PH spectrum "burn".

IN otherwords, all netitiquette is cockless and clitless bullshit.

So, are you retracting your previous statement that someone with high empathy can have NPD?

Also, wouldn't the feeling of "let me feel clever by outclevering the guy who's acting like he's clever" qualify as something in it for him?

That precludes and presumes a feeling of some sort upon 'outclevering" someone. just because you might have encountered that in a thread like this before does not mean that is happening here, now. Syllogisms are false.

Unless they make Zuckerberg a billion dollars.

You can't pose thw accusation couched as a question without knowing if I have ever gained pleasure from "outclevering", and your platform is weakened by refusing to acknowledge the non NPD pleasure is keeping ants away from the picnic spread.

no replies you give actually carry weight unless you address that last bit. ;)

and unless the above is addressed, "So, are you retracting your previous statement that someone with high empathy can have NPD? " is meaningless. It's like arguing "good driving" before someone has their learner's permit, much less a full license. *weg*

Do we not all have a feeling of some sort upon outclevering someone? Most people enjoy winning a game. It seems that a lack of enjoyment of outclevering would likely by a symptom of a personality disorder.

Thinking of people as ants, even non-empathetic people, seems lacking in empathy.

No, there are people that take satisfactions in besting an opponent during a challenge but that is not the same as outclevering someone. Therefore it is doubtful that it represents any form of disorder.

And thinking of people as ants and describing a person's BEHAVIOUR as akin to something trying to bugger up the picnic are WORLDS apart and you know it. Nice try there, compadre, but you drew a bow there, a long one, longer than Orion's!

Stating someone did something akin to a tapeworm is not the same as calling the person a tapeworm. When you say "I hate what you just chose to do" you are not at all saying you hate the person nor that they are a hareable (only) person. You, domming people, are well aware of such.

I also believe that a narcissist is just as likely to be a submissive as a dominant

Quite possibly. Re that, I was intrigued by one of the items cited as an indicator of a NPD in the OP's link:

"4) Idol Worship: Another common narcissistic tendency you might be less familiar with is the habit of putting people on pedestals. The logic goes a bit like this: "If I find someone perfect to be close to, maybe some of their perfection will rub off on me, and I'll become perfect by association." The fact that no one can be perfect is usually lost on the idol-worshipping narcissist -- at least until they discover, as they inevitably do, that their idol has clay feet. And stand back once that happens. Few experiences can prepare you for the vitriol of a suddenly disappointed narcissist. Look out for any pressure to conform to an image of perfection, no matter how lovely or magical the compulsive flattery might feel."

Does make me think of the stereotypical malesub who wants a Goddess who never has bad hair days and never needs to use the toilet.

I think a narcissist might be just as likely to be a bottom, but I dunno if they could truly submit? I'm probably just being overly semantical though.
