LOL, GREAT jibe!

I think we know my choice.

Buut I respect all widdle piggies for sacrificing themselves to the lust of the gourmand, or the lust of the assman.

Why are people fat. Easy answer: genetics, environment, culture, and health status.

Some of the current research has some interesting findings.

A> It turns out that artificial sweeteners lead to diabetes in research animals. The taste of "sweet" triggers insulin production expecting a surge of simple sugars. Artificial sweeteners trigger the insulin production but give it nothing to work on. Eventually the body is trained to produce less insulin.... i.e. diabetes

B> The mix of intestinal flora is different between obese creatures and thin creatures. In mice at least, an introduction of "thin" symbiotic bacteria can cause weight loss. Introduction of the "obese" mix causes rapid weight gain.

C> The common patter of dieting, period of restricted calorie intake followed by return to normal diet, is effective in livestock as a WEIGHT GAIN technique.

D> Injuries and illnesses that limit the physical activity often lead to weight gain.

Very few are fat by choice. Of course there is feederism but that is another topic.

Also, some people take medications that make weight gain very easy, and weight loss near impossible. So, a chronic illness, even one not associated with being obese, can lead to obesity in its treatment.

excellent point. There are at least 2 pharmaceutical treatments for DSM conditions, going back to the 80's, whic ALWAYS put on the weight, AND reduce muscle tone, and practicing psych's admit there is nothing that can be done about it.

Also, if anyone needs to be on steroids for any length of time and CANNOT exercise (hard) to balance off the steroids due to anatomical infirmities, then the steroids (even the cortical ones) mean you can kiss your Brad Pitt Pecs goodbye and say hello to Manlady ManBoobs.

and a lot of excess soft-flesh in other areas, too.

Okok, I wasn't going to post in this thread, but this is just silly.

Of *course* you are going to gain weight after returning to a high calorie diet. It's ridiculous to think that eating 1300 kCal a day for one week, and then 3000 kCal daily for a year is going to work out in a weight loss. It's not that people return to a "normal" diet, they just go back to eating more calories than their bodies require.

No it's not so silly, it's the supercompensation, a diet is like a training in resisting to famine, so the body has to keep bigger energy stock aka fat. So like a runner can do more and more kilometers in a single training having periods of "almost starvation" followed by high calorie diet will make you fatter in a more efficent way.

Your body cannot magically decide to stop using calories. What you are referring to is the "starvation mode" myth. It's a theory thrown around by people that states that dieting automatically slashes your metabolism, and puts you into a 'starvation mode', wherein your body hangs onto every calorie it can, converting everything to fat. While partially true, there's really no application to normal diet and exercise, and the diets studied have been EXTREME caloric reductions.

One of the best explanations that I've found, backed up with sources is found here

At any rate, crash diets are useless. If you aren't going to change your lifestyle, than there's really no point. If your caloric intake is higher than your caloric needs, then you're going to need some bigger pants eventually.

It's nice to know that these boards have not abandoned the scintillating conversation on trenchant topics for which they were earlier known.

OP, your list of failings of the fat folk, nasty as it is, IMO, reflects the silently "polite" thinking of many. Some may even use that list as motivation to keep to a healthy weight plan.

Three thoughts about weight issues:

1) Prescriptions can cause dramatic weight gain. Blood pressure meds, for example, but there are many others.

2) In the U.S., the food supply is presented after it's been saturated or soaked with preservatives. Some foods, such as beef and dairy, are permeated with growth hormones. Organic food is costly, and therefore not accessible to the financially challenged. Both preservatives and hormones contribute to weight gain.

3) Money and medical advances are eliminating fat. The recent boom in "like-lipo"noninvasive procedures, fat cells are burst and then eliminated from the body while the light (or laser) tightens the loose skin. If you can afford it, you can be as thin as you like.

OP, my question is, what if the thin person you see lacks discipline, good diet or exercise regimes and is really a fat person who what? cheated their way to thinness? What will that mean to your assessment if you only judge the book by its cover?
