The problem with rating a post, as I see I it, is that one poster may take offense at the advice given. Then the advice giver, who may just be blunt, will get nothing but negative ratings from others.

That's not fair either. What may be construed as positive feedback by one may not be by someone who needs to be "coddled".

I agree. Since more new posters are usually upset that they didn't get the answer they wanted, it would end up like blacklisting the fakes. It goes back to: Just because you didn't get the advice you wanted, doesn't mean that you didn't get good advice.

You clearly under estimate the drive of some of the people on this site.

Not every system is going to be 100%, i mean look at CM, about 50% of Subs are fakes lol. So i mean if they allow that to go on, why not do the +1? Perhaps put perameters in place that the +1 must be given by someone with at least 25 posts so that they cannot be a fake accnt? There are ways to deter fraud, that don't involve hardly any coding.

And again, those of us that were here during the Arpig fiasco would never buy into it.

Did all of those fake profiles have 25+ posts?

A popularity contest on a discussion forum? You have to be kidding.

I like the idea of removing the post count, it sends a message that each post should be judged by it's content alone, and I like that.

ETA: If people are incapable of judging post content, I don't think any mechanism the site can provide will help them.

Oh, yeah. Those fake profiles were moderated more than 25 times apiece.

Yep....a few of them had thousands of posts....

I think that's what started the only one account can post on the forums rule, which I appreciate.

If people use proxies, I don't know if the software is sophisticated enough to catch them.

Most did. It's not hard to rack up posts by playing around in the games section or Random Snippets. I could make 25 posts in less than 25 minutes. That's no guarantee that such a system won't be abused. Not even close.

So why not put controls in place to stop autoposting, and racking post counts up? There are for sure relatively simple ways to adjust parameters im sure to prevent this kind of thing.

There are controls in place to prevent posting too fast. I can still make 25 posts in less than 25 minutes. Last One To Post, as one example, is a thread designed to be a conversational thread. Get a bunch of people chatting and I can make a hundred posts in less than an hour. There are several such threads. Never mind threads like this one, that reached 24 pages in less than a week. Any thread that generates a lot of posts will rack up 25 posts in less than a day. Have you seen the Politics and Religion section? A couple of hours there and someone could have 200 posts, easily.

I'm very no nonsense either, ex-military. But, honestly it's better to speak the language of the poster... and if you see they are a Noob, welcome them with open arms... no need to be negative, unless of course the community itself doesn't like to grow?

J

I'm rarely negative with new posters. If I feel I can help or have something to contribute I do. If I don't, the majority of times I just won't reply, I may subscribe to the thread and follow it. Yes, there's the rare time I will reply and not pull punches if it's absolutely necessary. Here, as IRL, some need the clue by four to get the point. And even that doesn't work all the time. They want to blame everyone else for their problems but aren't willing to look within.
