Heinlein wrote that an armed society is a polite society, but apparently the guy yucking it up with his wife and texting after the lights went down in the theater hadn't heard of that concept.

The movie hadn't started yet. The only assholes here are the retired cop and anyone trying to push a particular agenda with this story.

Well, the same media that assured us that the Navy Yard was being shot up by several men using assault rifles, including an older black male in uniform, (complete with photo), and the breathless announcement that a gun store in Virginia had been the source, is at work here.

Something does sound odd. I wonder how someone could keep their gun tucked away until age 71 and then suddenly go off in the movies.

What I took from this story is that if no one had been carrying a gun, one more person would be alive today, and another would not have been facing spending the rest of his days in prison. If there were no guns in the equation, the worst that could have happened would have been fisticuffs until others intervened and separated the two protagonists.

We never cease hearing claims from the pro-gun lobby that guns prevent crimes. This seems to disprove that claim. This seems a clear case of gun possession turning what at worst would have been a minor assault into murder/manslaughter.

One case only proves or disproves something to those who have already made up their minds.

And kisses back atcha, Stef.

Right. The altercation took place during the previews, and the house lights go down for those.

The movieplex I mostly go to is where the guy got stabbed in the head with an icepick* a few years ago, for asking another patron to get off the phone. Of the two plexes within 20 miles, that's the nicer one. Yeah. I have an agenda. I want every asshole in the country who can't leave the phone on vibrate and in their pocket once the lights go down in the theater to hear about this, and have it in the back of their self-centered wee minds that the person they are pissing off just might be even crazier, and potentially much ruder than they are.

*What was actually used in the attack was an air-conditioning tool, but "icepick" conveys what sort of weapon it was much more clearly

That could happen, Butch. It seems like some of the initial facts are always in error in these cases, but there were 22 other people in the theater, and their stories seem to be lining up pretty well here, so far. Now it could come out that the dead texting asshole made the wrong move, and the retired cop was justified in shooting him. Florida is a stand-your-ground state, after all, and the cop paid for the seat he was sitting in.

I enjoy movies on the big screen, with the big sound, but all too often some random shithead is in the theater, and the staff doesn't give a shit.

We had a case here where all 20 some odd witnesses swore that a cop shot a unarmed kid in the back
who was just running away from a domestic dispute situation.
The camera on the cops dashboard (installed because of police brutality complaints)
showed the kid standing over the cop jacking a round into the chamber when the cop shot him.

So reading the coverage of the shooting in the theater in Tampa, I'm glad it's a retired cop that did it. Cops are definitely on my bad side today, after the tragedy of the Thomas verdict, and so there is a two-birds/one rock element. The message gets sent, and a cop will (with a bit of luck) die in prison.

Maybe I'm just in a really foul mood tonight, but my reaction at the moment is that is serves both of them right.

From your post I thought he had been convicted, you may have jumped the gun.

That's why there is a link. Even if you don't click it, you've got today's date, and the words "retired cop charged." I've also got a disclosure on attitude towards the world in there.

I read the article, very superficial.
In fact I read more, same thing.

Maybe the old shooter (or is it shootist?) suffered from diabetes type II and for that reason was grumpy.

Mm. A society of savages usually also are an extremely polite society. From this point of view it is suspicious that Chinese and Japanese and some other Asian populations are very polite.

We Dutch, and myself especially, have a reputation for being rude.

First, I could see the cop being pissed if the movie had started, if he was talking on the cell phone, but at the time of the incident, what the fuck was the big deal? Are the prevues that important?

Okay the guy could have had the phone on vibrate, but still.

Texting seems like it would be a relatively quiet and unobtrusive activity, although it's hard to say. Talking on the phone or answering it when it rings is a bit different. I was in a theater one time and I heard someone's cellphone go off. I expected that someone would quickly turn it off so as to not disturb the other patrons, but they just nonchalantly picked up and said "Hello?" I couldn't believe it.

As for this story, I wonder if being a retired cop had anything to do with it. If this guy spent most of his life giving orders to random civilians (with most complying because he was a cop), then it may be a habit that's hard to break. My experience has been that cops really, really don't like it when their authority is challenged; they've been known to become quite angry and violent when that happens. On the other side of the coin, most civilians don't like being told what to do, although they'll grudgingly accept it if it's a cop telling them.

That sort of chimes, I must say. I'm reminded of a time, shortly after he'd retired from the Met Police here, I went to a restaurant with my dad. He went apeshit - shockingly so, I'd never seen him like that before - when a man sparked up a cigarette nearby (perfectly legally, and on a smoking table). I had to escort my dad out of the restaurant PDQ before the restaurateur called the cops and he got arrested - the ultimate humiliation, natch.

There was no cop in this story. The septuagenarian claims he was attacked, had been struck in the head by something, and feared further harm at the hands of the much younger and more muscular attacker.

Apparently, the response to that was that the victim was only hitting the old guy in the head with a handful of popcorn.

I sense that trillions of electrons are going to die before this case fades away.

The guy had gone for him with a potentially lethal bag of popcorn, apparently.

Well, if the ex-cop hadn't shot him, he'd have probably killed him with his own bag of no doubt higher-calibre popcorn (with full metal jacket) - so let's have no nonsense about gun control and the failings of SYG in cinemas on this thread.

Electrons are charged particles that have a small but definite mass.

Mass can neither be gained nor lost. it can only be converted to energy.

According to the laws of physics, you are wrong.
