I just got a call saying that medicaid won't pay for me to see a dietitian unless I were diabetic which I'm not...so I can't see one.

Have you been tested for insulin resistance?

Yes, I have it. My insulin levels were high. But my a1c is only 5.3

I'll eat my hat if the one and only reason Medicaid would ever pay for a dietitian is if a person is diabetic.

I think you'd benefit from a case manager to help you navigate this.

They actually stopped covering my OP treatment for bulimia 2 years ago...and that's the reason I stopped going at the time.

Okay, so since you're insulin resistant, they should be able to get you into a dietitian because it's controlled primarily by diet.

The lady on the phone said that I have to actually have diabetes or they won't cover it. And it's $50 per session.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Natural/OTC ways to treat severe pain? (2/21/2014 1:39:53 PM)

Isn't there some sort of helpline for people who are trying to figure out how to get through all the red tape?

I don't mean to be offensive, but given your weight, I would assume that they would suggest that you see one ASAP as it can cause long term damage which would cost them more than addressing the problem before it spirals out of control.

Could it be that you are a bit meek on the phone and in person and people just tend to walk all over you? Could a friend go with you and make a few calls for you?

I will email my doctor again and see what she says.

Don't email - go see her!!

Just stand there and say something like -
"look at me! I'm obese and it's dangerous to my health. I need to see a dietician pronto before my weight kills me".

I just saw her a few weeks ago. My next appointment isn't for another two months or so. I'm not going in unless I'm sick or something.

I really don't think a RD is going to help anyways.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Natural/OTC ways to treat severe pain? (2/21/2014 2:09:27 PM)

Seriously, you need somebody to help you, I have the feeling that you do avoid confrontation at all costs, isn't there something like an advise bureau for people on medicaid, who would help you and also put their foot down if you're fopped off with stupid excuses?

I'm sorry but your weight is causing you edema, you have BP problems, you're dangerously overweight with an eating disorder and they do not think you need to see a dietician? Seriously, the NHS is as bad as it gets when it comes to health care systems in Europe, but they would have more or less forced you to see a dietician and strongly persuaded you to take part in water gymnastics and nutrition classes.

You should consider collecting all the fact and contacting the local media, that's just outrageous.

Because what you're doing now is so successful?

Quite frankly, you have a negative answer for every piece of advice that you're given. What you're doing clearly isn't working, but you shoot down what has worked for others without trying. So, I'm done trying to help.

I tend to doubt that based on some of her interactions here. The birth control thread was "enlightening".

A RD isn't going to tell me anything I don't already know...I've seen several in the past. Most just put you on a 1500 calorie diet...which I would gain on.

Every fat person I know gets edema...so that's not a big deal. I'm hoping once I see an endo, they will be able to figure out the cause of the high blood pressure...I'm seriously wondering if I may have cushings. Also, my bp might be good now that I'm on hydrocodone again...don't know.

@dollparts85

I dont know your dynamic with your master but your profile says you are happily owned.

Maybe it is time you asked him to step in and take care of it and submitted to his decisions on this. I know if my girl/wife was in the situation and needed help I would step in and drop a mountain on the Dr if needed.

You should not be in pain and the medical system should not be pushing back on you the way they are. If you have issues standing up and telling them that, maybe it is time for your SO/master/Boyfriend/Husband to step in and make the point.

He goes to all my appointments with me and everything. Talks to the doctors. He does what he can. He hates seeing me like this.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Natural/OTC ways to treat severe pain? (2/21/2014 2:40:34 PM)

Seriously, edema is a big deal with all sorts of implications, and being big enough to have edema is also an issue for which you should see a dietician.

Look, my weight has always been fairly steady, even with being hypothyroid and earlier eating disorders, the only time my weight really jumped up dramatically, was after cancer surgery, due to losing an ovary my hormones freaked out and I started retaining fluids. I'm willing to bet that a lot of your weight is really just retained fluids and a pretty fucked up metabolism. I suffered and starved myself for months and couldn't shift anything before I dared to speak to my OB Gyn, who got to the root of the problem, he told me that I might have to suffer for 2 years until the remaining ovary will produce enough (he was right) but said he can do something about the fluid retention, as that was a problem that could affect my health and heart dramatically. I got a bunch of meds and a very salt restrictive diet and had to actually up my calorie intake but the right calories.

Keep on pushing them, I was about your age (actually a bit younger) when the big C and all the shit happened, if you are also suffering from a lack of oestrogen, you will feel down and out, but things can change and will, if you keep pushing. Don't be afraid to ask questions and if you get a no, ask why not. Also if your hormones are out of whack (yeah, such a technical term), it will influence your weight considerably, thyroid problems make it even worse.

All of that can be solved, but the main thing is, as long as you keep purging, they can't, you got to stop the purging, get a good support system around you and push, push, push. Take notes when you are speaking to a health professional, if you are speaking to somebody on the phone, write down the name and the date (ask for their name and how to spell it), don't get brushed off.

I know my estrogen is low but they can't do anything about that b/c I can't take estrogen. I'm going to be seeing a new ob/gyn in a couple weeks...maybe she will be able to help. I'm really worried about that appointment though b/c my last pap was abnormal. Hopefully this one will be normal.

I agree. I'm sorry.

I mean, I know how to eat properly. I can write up perfect meal plans...it's just a matter of getting myself to eat it all and not freak out when the scale goes up and up. *sighs*

I think exercise is really key. I tried to walk today. Made it a little ways outside...to the end of the building...not very far but I guess it's a start. Hopefully the snow will melt soon then I could walk on the side walk instead of the road.

To all who are wondering about medicaid. Here is a link to the New York Medicaid manual. In New York there are several networks a person can choose from. Although each plan offers the same benefits.

https://www.health.ny.gov/health_care/managed_care/docs/medicaid_managed_model_member_handbook.pdf

Here is a quick list of additional services available just by calling member services.

Besides the regular check ups and the shots you and your family need, here are some other ways to keep you in good health:
• Classes for you and your family
• Stop-smoking classes
• Pre-natal care and nutrition
• Grief / Loss support
• Breast feeding and baby care
• Stress management
• Weight control
• Cholesterol control
• Diabetes counseling and self-management training
• Asthma counseling and self-management training
