Why? Your premise is that the sperm is a faithful replica of half the man's DNA. The underlying assumption of the article is that, in older men, there is a greater chance of mutations occurring when the sperm is produced in his body.

It's been common knowledge (at least to me) that women who are older have greater chances of producing a Down's baby. In other words, as a woman ages, there's a greater chance of mutations when eggs are produced in her body. Why not the same for men?

An Israeli study showed a correlation between paternal age and autism.

Even though sperm is newly made, 40 years of being subject to cosmic rays will cause damage in the sperm being produced.

That's precisely right, it was always common knowledge. Only recently being revisited and adding new criteria. In those old studies that determined older women have a higher risk they only measured the age of the women.... the redid the study measuring the age of the men as well (and added a larger sample size... biggest ever if if I remember correctly).... which led to a whole slew of new studies about various related diseases that were known to be affected by age. Which is one of the ones des probably saw.

I don't think the above poster was being serious, what they said was the equivalent of saying "the sky is blue so sunsets are bullshit" so I figured they were just trying to get a laugh.

I took notice of the study as several of my Israeli cousins have children with autism. By the time they come out of the military, spend a year traveling, then go to university and eventually get an advanced degree, they're older when they marry and have children then my family in America is.

Thanks for that link, I hadn't remembered if socioeconomic status was an included constant. The trick with studies in epigenetic in over decades it's hard to limit variables to determine the exact cause... we can't raise kids in glass boxes for the sake of science after all. But with advances in recent years making rna sequencing easier identifying changes has become a lot easier. I expect a lot more development in the field of epigenetics in coming years. Once specific genes have been identified it will be possible to narrow down what caused activation and determine the root environmental causes of many disorders known to exhibit environmental bias.... it's a fascinating field that is moving quickly right now.
