This follows a trend that emerged first in Sydney with the #illridewithyou campaign in the wake of the recent siege. The trend was picked up in Germany where counter demonstrators outnumbered the right-wing anti-immigrant and anti-Islam PEGIDA movement by a factor of 10 to 1.

In all 3 instances, democratic values of inclusion have been stressed, along with a clear message of solidarity and inclusion towards Muslims who have in the past been singled out for attacks and marginalisation following terrorist incidents. It appears that people are increasingly sick of the Right's message of fear and hate towards minorities especially Muslim minorities, and are taking steps to make this rejection of the politics of hate and exclusion.
