Kirata -> More Racism.... (3/6/2015 6:55:37 PM)

A petition has been started at Change.org to force the city of Buffalo, New York, to change it's name.

As an enrolled member of Navajo Nation, it is mine, Mark Beasley's, and my Native American colleagues' position that the City of Buffalo and the the news outlet Buffalo News, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, should change their offensive and racist names containing the word "Buffalo" ... End the use of racist and genocidal imagery and symbols toward Native Americans today. End the pain and denigration these symbols and images incite and the damage to the psyches of Native Americans everywhere. Drop "Buffalo" from the New York city and its main news source and restore Native people's dignity. ~Link

It's not clear whether this group has a bug up their ass about Buffalo, New York, or whether (ye gods) they're actually serious, but New York isn't the only state with a city or town named "Buffalo." According to Answers.com, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming all have cities or towns named "Buffalo," and Wisconsin has two (see here).

In addition, according to Wikipedia the following, among others, have adopted the buffalo as a symbol, team name, or mascot (see here).

U.S. Department of the Interior
Beachwood High School
Bethany College (West Virginia)
Bucknell University
Buffalo, New York
Buffalo Bills
Buffalo Bisons
Buffalo Bulls
Buffalo Grove High School
Buffalo Sabres
University at Buffalo, The State University of New York
University of Colorado
Gallaudet University
Harding University
Howard University
Seal of the State of Indiana
Lipscomb University
Marshall University
Milligan College
Independence Party of Minnesota
Nichols College
North Dakota State University
Oklahoma Baptist University
Oklahoma City Thunder
Point Park University
Southwestern Law School
West Texas A&M University

Obviously we have a lot of work to do to cleanse this offensive, racist, and genocidal imagery from our national consciousness, and for that reason I am not including an image of a buffalo in this post and am profoundly apologetic for having to use the B-word in order to bring this outrage to your attention.

K.

An old lady friend of mine who spoke with quite the Cockney accent used to ask me: "Michael, you're an Indian. Wots the difference between a buffalo and bison?"

I said that I wasn't sure and she said: "Ya can't wash your hair in a buffalo" ("bison" = "basin")

Michael

I apologize for the "racist" joke

Lucylastic -> RE: More Racism.... (3/7/2015 4:28:33 AM)

it has to be said in a cockney accent:) LOL

bounty44 -> RE: More Racism.... (3/7/2015 4:59:59 AM)

this brings to mind the long pc turf war over other indian mascot names---most recently concerning the Washington redskins.

Zonie63 -> RE: More Racism.... (3/7/2015 5:01:19 AM)

This is the first I've heard anyone complain about the name "Buffalo" before (although I've heard a few complaints about the city itself). I agree that it was an outrage and an atrocity that buffalo were hunted to near extinction, although there are still some buffalo left and slowly making a comeback. But that's no reason to eliminate the word itself.

Lucylastic -> RE: More Racism.... (3/7/2015 5:04:45 AM)

theres all kinds of strange petitions out there, in many places:)
I had one the other day that wasnt political, but as farcial, i have to look thru my history and find it

My favorite world series was during a outbreak of mascot bashing. The two teams were Cleveland and Atlanta.

Native Americans liked Bison and hunted them therefor any use of the word is co-opting their culture, is my best guess.

But what can you expect from the Society of the Perpetually Offended?

Eating three meals a day is RACIST!

bounty44 -> RE: More Racism.... (3/7/2015 10:47:32 AM)

the argument from the article itself is that "every dead buffalo is a dead indian."

they argue that the hunting (to local extinction) of buffalo was part and parcel to the goal of eradicating the Indians.

the site is just a clearinghouse where people can start a petition for anything they want. so far there are 198 signees on that one...

True but misleading.
Naming a city after the Buffalo would be honoring the foundation of Indian society.
On top of this Buffalo NY predated that statement.

im from western ny and I enjoyed looking at that!

I don't think its so much they are saying that settlers in ny decimated herds, or that the city here was named after local herds, but rather, that the name itself conjurs up imagery of the indian genocide and buffalo decimations that occurred elsewhere.

yes, that's the very argument at the heart of one side in the mascot "controversy"
