ORIGINAL: PeonForHer quote:
Getting beat up poisoned for holding views "without reason" (the gall of some people). Is that a reference to the Jewish man I met, whose great uncle had been killed in a concentration camp, K? Whatever: What would you say to such a man, who'd offered the strongly held opinion that there's no reasoning with antisemites, and that unless you nip their racist language in the bud, you'll allow a belief to grow beyond a point where you can do anything about it - where, for instance, an ultra right wing political group suddenly gets elected to run your country - and then starts to talk about getting rid of an 'undesirable group in society' of which you happen to be a member? I'm saying: there's not much point in enumerating all the possible, easy (not to say kind of boring) examples of 'pc gone mad'. What about the difficult ones - ones hinted at by this Jewish man that I met? I mean - to me, he had a plausible point: that, if you let racist language burgeon - because language is just language and that's what we should do in a civilised society - it can suddenly turn into something that's very uncivil indeed. For instance, at the time a putative Nazi party takes power. And at that point, it's too late: you, the Jew, are suddenly in very, very serious trouble. Hmmm...I'd say you do what is allowed. Let people be free to hold any belief they want, speak any way they want...But when those thoughts and expressions become actions outside the law, then action is taken. You can try and "nip" anything in the bud that you want but it will not stop the mind. Unless you want to go to the point of establishing thought control. At that point, what makes you...And your decisions as to what constitutes "proper thought" any different than the regime you just described?
