Artists have chipped in to capture what happened.

Yep.

Those artists who've actually depicted Aylan, the boy in question, have captured him as he was in the photos well. It's pretty damned heart-rending.

I do like theone of the life-ring in the shape of a heart and the caption 'Don't let compassion die'. Rams the point home.

I dearly wish that I could say the same about Australians' response to refugees but our Govt here has implemented an inhumane regimen that demonises refugees and cynically punishes them for the 'crime' of arriving at our shores seeking refuge from wars that Australia has played a significant part in fomenting, all for short term political advantage. Our shame. Refugees seeking asylum have been used to bring out the worst in the Australian character.

See, that was the case here, too - till literally just a few days ago. Suddenly it's become markedly less acceptable to talk coldly of the 'lack of room here' for 'swarms of immigrants', etc, etc.

I don't think I've seen anything like this phenomenon here before - of such hitherto apparently unmovable coldness thawing so quickly. In part, I think it's down to people being reminded of the European Jewish refugees in the 1930s - there's still a lot of shame about that. (Various commentators have been making that comparison just recently.) One of the most trenchant points being made is that of 'You don't want to look back, 30 years hence, and feel guilt at being one of those who didn't help when it was most needed'.

this story has a good connection peon to the thread you started about America's responsibility to the rest of the world and if I can just extend that sentiment to lots of other countries, I wonder at least a couple of things:

one is, given a moral responsibility to receive refugees, how best to go about it.

second, and much more controversial, do the free countries of the world have any responsibility for intervening on the host country in question so as to prevent refugee crises from arising in the first place.

The irony is there was no migrant crisis in 2003 and the borders of Syria and IRAQ were secure. All that changed after Operation Iraqi Freedom. The idea behind tihe IRAQ invasion, thought up the by NEOCONS, is that regime change in IRAQ would add stability to the region. The stupidity and wrongheadedness of their thinking started with the insurrection (Dead Enders according to Cheney and Rumsfeldt) and is still roiling today.

Iraq was stable early when Obama took over for Bush

Obama: "...we’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government that was elected by its people."

As an immigration lawyer, I am beside myself with grief. The father had family in Canada, and he could have taken his family there, but the rules and the red tape (this is super common in the USA too) were too thick to make it happen. Now the father has lost his whole family, simply trying to find a safe place for them to live.

The obvious solution isnt to help make their home safe for them. The obvious answer is to throw our borders wide open so that hordes of third worlders can make out home more like theirs

To put it frankly, Democrats and all the non-conservatives in the nation wanted out of Iraq. The GOP and their mindless minions, the conservatives wanted to stay in Iraq. Grinding US Soldiers to death and serious/long term wounds. While also driving up the US Debt. Or did you NOT understand Sen. McCain's 'plan' during the run up to the 2012 election?

Even today all the GOP candidates want a war with Iraq. Why? Because they aren't sending their kids to be wounded and slaughtered. Imagine if we sent conservatives and their politically elected 'servents' (or their kids) to war (rather than the rest of us)? We'd never see/hear so much as a peep from them about going to war....

I believe a people unwilling and or unable, after billions in training and equipment and thousands of American and our allies lives, to defend themselves are not worth one drop of American blood. As far as i was concerned they were never worth the lives of our sons and daughters.

Damn right. It's just a bleeding shame that everybody in the military is a progressive liberal. Those cowardly conservatives never risk their own asses! What can we do about that, joether? Got any ideas?

K.

What's more important in the Middle East? Democracy or stability? And how can either exist without a government and military willing to keep them secure?

You have to define stable for that question to be relevant

Saddam Hussein had a vast network of torture prisons, he employed professional rapists who raped families' women as their families were forced to watch (imagine what that does in a strict Muslim society where women are stoned as punishment for being raped). Saddam committed mass murders and genocide against his own people, started wars with his neighbors, sponsored terrorism, tried to assassinate one of our presidents. His sons did things like grab attractive women off of the street, raped them in horrific fahion then fed the victim to lions

Thats what cloudboy calls stable...

how about you

You still need to define the word because (again), in this environment some take it to mean mass desperation and chaos

BTW, Obamas policies, his Arab Spring, that was a major force behind "stable" governments in the region falling into the hands of his hardliner Islamist friends

Drowned toddler Aylan Kurdi laid to rest in Syrian city he fled

(CNN) Aylan Kurdi's last journey was supposed to take him to a safe home -- hundreds of miles away from the relentless war in his native Syria.

Instead, it ended with a funeral for the 2-year-old in the city his family tried to flee.

Aylan's body arrived in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Friday. From there, it made its final trip home to Kobani, the Syrian city his family left to escape the daily barrage of bombs.

The tiny boy with a cheeky smile may be gone, but the wrenching images showing his drowned body will live on.

The photos, which have galvanized the world and become the latest symbol of the migrant crisis in Europe, show his body lying on a Turkish beach. He's wearing a red shirt and black shoes, his face partly covered by sand and gentle waves, as if he were sleeping.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/04/europe/syria-aylan-kurdi-funeral/

"I don't want anything else from this world," he said. "Everything I was dreaming of is gone. I want to bury my children and sit beside them until I die."

Mmm hmm, "pearls"

Any tragedy that leftists can use is a "pearl"

And anyone who proposes a permanent solution, such as working to make the childs' homeland a better place, is "swine"

You are a piece of shit
