My guess is that you actually know very little about what your thyroid does, and what being hypothyroid does to your body.

If you suddenly had to have your thyroid removed next month and did not get thyroid hormone replacement, you would gain weight and the depression hypothyroidism causes would probably lead to you becoming apathetic about going to the gym.

I know someone who had her thyroid removed and nobody thought to put her on replacement therapy.
In a relatively short amount of time, she gained something like 200lbs.

So, hypothyroidism is not an excuse.
And it is much less common in men, women are 5-8 times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.

As for society not having culpability...this is the food pyramid for 1992. This is how kids were taught to eat.

6-11 servings of grains!

A high carbohydrate diet raises glucose levels and causes insulin resistance, which causes weight gain. Continuing to eat a high carb diet over works the pancreas until it gives up which is diabetes.

Not only that, but thyroid issues are often caused -or made worse- by the conventional wisdom 'healthy' diet, of eating tons of grains and carbs.
So lot of the women who end up having these issues actually got there because they were trying to eat healthy in the first place.

I also knew a woman whose level was so low, her Dr was surprised she wasn't in a coma.

Low metabolism from hypothyroidism affects every organ system.

The first time I went to a nutritionist to help me control my typeII diabetes, she recommended 90 grams of carbs per meal.
No, I am not kidding.

When my father went in they did close to the same thing. He needs a knee replacement (ex-soccer player) and they refused because he wasn't losing weight and his A1C wasn't going down. They accused him of not following the diet.

I tore up what his dietician gave him and replaced it with the South Beach diet book. He's lost 30lbs and his A1C went under 7.

He still gets confused though. Yesterday he said he was eating rice. When I told him he shouldn't be eating rice his response was "But, the label says 'Heart Healthy'..." I had to explain that the "heart healthy" label means low fat, which won't help his diabetes because low fat usually means high carb....and high carb is what is going to raise his blood sugar.

It really is very confusing with the tons of conflicting information out there. I literally burst into tears at my doctors when I told him I went to the grocery store to "buy healthy" food and had no idea where to start. He nodded his head and said, "I'm not surprised, there is a lot of bad information out there."

That old food pyramid is crazy, but I remember it.

Is there an updated pyramid now? The sad bit is, in my country, this is still the national food pyramid and what's taught as healthy in schools. Although the thing is, Asians been following this diet and they don't got obesity issues. But yea, diabetic issue is huge. Many stick thin Asians are diabetic.

This is the new one:

It's a little better, but not much. The irony is it says "Limit high glycemic foods", but most of the foods listed at the bottom are high glycemic and most of the foods listed at the top are low glycemic.

FYI: the lower the fat content on dairy products, the higher the carb count, thus a higher glycemic index.

Full fat milk has a GI of 11. Skim Milk has a GI of 34. Sucrose (table sugar) has a GI of 65.

The old food pyramid is the same ratios used to fatten up feed lot cattle.
I read that somewhere.

And it's a diet cattle doesn't survive on either. If we didn't slaughter them as young as we do, they'd drop death on their own a little while later anyways, way before the end of their lifespan.

There's reasons besides taste to buy grassfed meat if you can afford it.

I do think it's helpful the pyramid now includes water. I remember when my daughter did 4H Horse Bowl, how surprised the kids were to learn that the most important nutritional element was water.

Too often people think they're hungry when really they're just thirsty.

Bought some grass fed new York strips at Lucky's market a few months ago. It was a splurge. But OMG!!!! Best steaks I ever had! Worth every penny.

True, though you could say the same thing about people in mediteranean countries, who tend to have a carb-biased diet but be quite healthy. I think it's a mix of factors. My wife's Asian and she pointed me at some research observing how some Asian immigrants to the US have almost no incidence of breast cancer, but after 2 generations it's more or less the same as for Caucasians. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2837454/ if anyone cares)

By default, a lot of the food sold in the US is way way over-processed. I'm in the Bay Area so I'm lucky to have access to farmer's markets, lots of organic or unprocessed food at regular supermarkets, and also various ethnic supermarkets. I'm also a pretty good cook and make dinner most nights so I use basic ingredients a lot, and I tend to forget that not everyone has the same options or experience. A year ago I was on the road for work and decided to have breakfast at a Denny's restaurant just for a change - I had been driving all night, so I went in and ordered a big yummy breakfast. By the time I got half-way through it I thought I was going to have a heart attack sitting there in the booth. Large-scale food supply/service firms, which dominate much of the country, do not care a fig about the health impact of the food they sell to their customers.

If you can, I think learning to cook is one of the best things you can do for your health, as well as your palate. It takes time to learn and is more expensive at first, as you need semi-decent cookware and to learn how to buy food and manage your larder. You will go through a lot of frustration on the way, and every so often you end up consigning what you thought was going to be a delicious meal to the trashcan and crying into a bowl of canned soup instead. But as you get better it is super-satisfying and it is much easier to manage your diet when you know what you're eating.

My view is that if I couldn't grow it in my backyard and prepare it in my kitchen, we don't eat it.

We essentially live on well marbled protein, eggs, green veggies, legumes and a small amount of dairy.

I have the opposite problem as far as "subs being unfit" goes.... most doms ive had preach fitness for the first month or so until they realize I have way more energy than they thought then they set out trying to make me fat. Im not nearly as fit as I was in my younger years(need some avtive hobbies again... or to not libe in the desert so I can go outside) but most men cant wrap their head around the concept that while they can eat 4000 calories day and turn it into muscle if I tried that id be fused to the bed in a few months I let a ton of food spoil because no matter how many times I tell him to stop buying food, the fridge is full... he still does.

On the other hand im against the gym... why do I have to go let people look at my butt to work out? I much prefer exercising privately than bwing bugged by strangers every ten minutes and only feeling comfortable using the 3 machines I know hpw to use... plus cant do my workouts at a gym... you can run in place anywhere, and I have gallons of water for curls.... and some really heave metal bars and old sewing machine. But putting on sand filled anklets and jump kicking around the furniture with knives.... hellah fun. Of course I look like an idiot and ive put more holes in pieces of furniture than I care to admit but its a lot more entertaining than running in place for hours while ignoring people starting at you like meat.
