Disclaimer: Copied and pasted from my daily blog.

I mentioned, in a previous post, that I have a few posts "in the can" for days when I just can't seem to find any inspiration to write. That wouldn't really be in keeping with the spirit of my oath to write something every day for thirty days so, while I was tempted to just "trot something out there", I won't be doing that.

Over the weekend, in the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstain travesty, reports emerged about a male actor that claimed to have been sexually assaulted/molested by one of my favorite actors, Kevin Spacey.

To say that I'm a fan(atic) might be a bit of an overstatement since I am not really a fan(atic) of anything, really, but in the common parlance of the day, I was a fan of Mr. Spacey.

I was so much a fan that not two weeks ago, I posted a video of him, doing impressions from an episode of "Inside The Actors' Studio" on a friend's feed (or whatever the hell it's called on Facebook). I have watched just about every movie he's ever been in and will even stomach late night shows that he's advertised to be on (until after his spot and then, I change the channel).

I also believe that there are some people that are just "jumping on the bandwagon" to become relevant again. I'm not saying that, lightly. I had "Me Too" as a status on my Facebook page because it was accurate and I wanted to show some solidarity with the plethora of Weinstain victims that may still be "lurking", afraid to come forward.

I'm not one who is overly involved with "pop culture" so much so that this actor's name didn't even ring a bell for me. I saw "Rent". I watched the first episode of "Star Trek: Discovery" (and was soundly disappointed), but I didn't make the connection to the actor's name. So, when the allegation came to light, I was hoping that he resided in the aforementioned category of someone who was looking to recapture former glory. Obviously, on the surface, that wouldn't appear to be the case.

I was "hoping against hope" that the allegation against Mr. Spacey was false. The exact allegation was:
quote:

“He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me. He was trying to seduce me. I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”¹

My "hoping against hope" involved the fact of a fourteen-year-old's impression of what happened. I thought: Maybe there's some "grey area", here.

My hope was dashed to bits when Mr. Spacey released a statement:
quote:

"I have a lot of respect for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I'm beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over thirty years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.

This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories about me out there and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.

- Kevin Spacey"²

Let's start with the first paragraph, shall we (and please keep in mind: I was a "fan" of Kevin Spacey until I read and digested his statement)?

He espouses respect for his victim's career and then, he tells us that he doesn't remember the incident.

Let's stop here for a moment. Just that fact that he "doesn't remember the incident" tells me that it wasn't an isolated one. I mean, drunk or not how many times did something similar happen to the extent that he doesn't remember this one? Let's also notice the language of the statement. It is a classic non-denial denial. No sale, Kevin.

He goes on to say if he did behave in such a way, he owes his victim "the sincerest apology",but tries to mitigate his behavior by telling us he was drunk. It always bothers me, when people say: "I owe you an apology". Okay. And? If you loaned me $100 dollars which I promised to pay back within a month, how good would you feel hearing me say: "I owe you $100" a year later? Don't tell me you owe me an apology. Freakin' give it to me!

Mr. Spacey does, eventually, say the "bull***t words of apology". You know, the words every four-year-old says, when they get caught pulling the dog's tail or some such: "I'm sorry ...", but he couples them with another nothing phrase: " ... for the feelings ...". Again, typical non-apology apology. Again, Kevin: No sale.

Lastly, he goes on to (again) try to mitigate his behavior by exclaiming to the world he's gay and he is going to start living that way. So what?

Gay ... straight ... black ... white ... young ... old ... drunk ... sober ... You're a piece of crap child molester! Die in a fire!

People have pointed out that in 2013, Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane made a joke at an award ceremony that seemed to reference Weinstein's reputation as a harasser.

Now I'm hearing that a 2005 episode of Family Guy featured a child escaping from Kevin Spacey's basement.

I hope that he comes back and gives context to that.

I have always been a huge Kevin Spacey fan.

Now I see the scenes between him and the young girl in American Beauty differently, warranted or not.

A real cynic might wonder if that was why he got cast in that part. Sort of an in joke for those in the know...

You never know. I'm sure it tickled his funny bone to know that most viewers wouldn't get the in-joke.

It was never a secret in Hollywood that Spacey was gay. I suppose we should just all be thankful that Anthony Rapp didn't end up sharing Lester Burham's fate in American Beauty.

I have to wonder what a 14 year old is doing at a party like that. Did he have parents ? Did they know where he was ? Did they care ? Who brought him there ?

Legitimate questions, perhaps in another context.

Personally, I'm sure the answer lies somewhere in the "stage mother/father" realm.

I would say this: When I was fourteen, I was frequently able to get from under my guardians' thumb, even late at night. So, I'm not too quick to "blame the parents".

Ostensibly, since the fourteen-year-old was in a play, at the time, he had to be afforded some freedoms that a "normal" fourteen-year-old probably didn't enjoy.

Same as the underaged teen Polanski fled the country to avoid being prosecuted for fucking, at a guess.
Why do you think Sylvester Stallone spent most of his adolescence in a gym working out? He was probably worried that his hilariously ambitious mother would pimp him out to a few producers to help his career if he didn't acquire enough physical training to defend himself...

There is a lot of chatter on Reddit about Spacey today, with the general gist that he’s notorious for approaching under and slightly over age boys. I also watched that 2005 Family Guy clip; a naked little kid running screaming that he just escaped Spacey’s basement.

I have a feeling this is just the tip of the iceberg for these sad revelations coming now. Time to spend money elsewhere than on Hollywood.

I think Reagan spent most of the '80s saying that. Didn't happen then, either.

I'm going to "out" myself. I don't think I've ever seen a full episode of "Family Guy". I've never found McFarlene to be very funny. In fact, if his joke at the 2013 Oscars was based upon any kind of personal KNOWLEDGE, I attribute the same disdain to him as I do the rest of the denizens of that sewer out west that helped Weinstain keep his horrible secret and continue his despicable assaults.

It's a shame, too. I kind of like "The Orville"

Yeah, but back then there was a bit more to Hollywood than endless McSuperhero movies.
After 11/9 I would never underestimate the American public's hunger for bullshit, but still... it MUST become tiresome eventually.

I've said on other threads that I believe all of the news coverage about the allegations about Weinstein are going to bring up some very difficult memories for some victims and it will lead to some coming forward that never have before. My first thoughts don't tend to be 'person form the entertainment industry' trying to grab on to a possible fifteen minutes of fame. I'm more likely to think they are being legitimate because it makes perfect sense that some people are processing difficult emotions and that's why they are speaking up.

Along with the points raised in the OP, the only other thing I can come up with for the 'doesn't remember' part is me wondering if Spacey has ever been in the habit of drinking (or using other substances) to the point where he actually doesn't remember what he's done the night before. I'm not saying that the alcohol or level of intoxication excuses the behavior. It could explain why the victim recalls the incident and Spacey doesn't, on top of the other factors. If the 'doesn't remember' part for whatever reason is really the case, it's not going to help the victim much.

I'm dubious of the idea that he can drink to the point of a blackout that trashes his memory and still get it up in order to molest somebody who isn't old enough to consent. It's more likely an excuse, and not a very convincing one.

You're probably right. Pardon the expression on this but being female, I don't always consider 'whiskey d^ck' as one of my first thoughts.

Even if Spacey does remember, I'm really not counting on him admitting what he did, if he did it. Not a whole lot of perpetrators do.

Have you ever been so drunk or high that you could not remember what you did? I have been drunk more than a few times, sad but so, but I remember just fine... too fine... especially the head in the pot part. I think people who use memory as an excuse for behavior while intoxicated are lying.

Add to that: one has to be AWFULLY drunk to not remember something. Spacey isn't a very big guy. How could he be THAT drunk and have the ability (strength and balance) to lift a teen-ager (When I was fourteen, I was 5' 6" and weighed about 145 lbs. and I'm not a very big guy)?

Spacey's a lying piece of shit, if Rapp's accusation is true (and Spacey's statement certainly makes the accusation seem true).

The description of the encounter does not mention any ejaculation or anything like that, so there's nothing actually saying that Kevin Spacey "got anything up". He could have been blottoed, too drunk to perform, and that's why it didn't go any further.

Not excusing him. Just an explanation of why he might not remember. For me the jury is still out on whether I buy that part of his "apology"

I have been that drunk, blackout drunk. Did all sorts of things that I had no recollection of the next day. A certain hotel room in New Orleans even got rearranged and slightly remodeled after an evening spent at the Howl at the Moon piano bar. So yeah, it happens. Still not sure whether or not to buy Spacey story, and even if it's true it doesn't excuse it (at least it didn't excuse my behavior with the hotel management the next day), but the scenario is completely realistic.
