I Just wish they would have taken more time and included the Democrats in the process.

The Democrats weren't going to work with the GOP. That's not likely to happen any time soon (and the same goes for the GOP not working with the Democrats). The GOP wanted certain things and the Democrats were unlikely to allow those things without adding stuff that is unworkable to the GOP.

the bill took something like 4-5 months to create and ive seen a number of people "in the know" comment on how the democrats were consulted regularly both as a matter of course (committees being bi-partisan) and spontaneously.

Lucylastic -> RE: Senate to vote soon on tax bill (12/21/2017 8:42:11 AM)

Hopefully they will fund CHIP before they leave.

Lucylastic -> RE: Senate to vote soon on tax bill (12/21/2017 8:45:52 AM)

oh they did...thank god for that...
House Republicans have included $2.85 billion to extend funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in a stopgap spending measure intended to prevent a government shutdown on Saturday.

The funding provides money for CHIP through the end of March as the GOP faces criticism from Democrats, who argued Republicans were prepared to leave town without extending a program that provides support for 9 million children across the country.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been giving states unused funds to help them keep their CHIP benefits afloat. Some states have sent letters or posted notices on their website warning families that, without new funding from Congress, their CHIP benefits could go away at the end of January.

The funding uncertainty has also impacted community health centers, some of which have instituted hiring freezes and run into trouble retaining and recruiting new staff.
The bill also gives $550 million to community health centers — which provide comprehensive care to roughly 27 million of the nation’s most vulnerable — and extends other public health programs through March.

This legislation redirects $750 million from ObamaCare’s public health and prevention fund to pay for this extension, which House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Democrats would oppose at a House Rules Committee hearing Thursday morning.

She added that she is “disappointed” in the move since there are ongoing talks about bipartisan offsets.

Democrats had been hammering Republicans for passing their sweeping tax-cut legislation while CHIP remained in limbo, arguing it would leave millions of families who depend upon the program uncertain over their future at the holidays.

Children’s advocates and state officials have been urging Congress to pass a five-year reauthorization of the program.

Lawmakers are scrambling to pass a bill to keep the government funded through Jan. 19. Without a new funding bill, the government would shut down on Saturday.

Some activists expressed frustration that the full reauthorization likely won’t come by the end of the year.

“For the families and nearly 9 million children who rely on CHIP for their health care, this is highly disappointing,” Bruce Lesley, president of First Focus, a children and families health advocacy group, wrote in an email.

“This action highlights Congress’ continued inability and failure to prioritize and protect the health of children and a very popular and successful program. It needlessly leaves states and families in limbo, which is unacceptable. This may go down as the worst year for children in Congress in decades.”

The House passed a partisan bill to reauthorize CHIP and community health centers earlier this year, but Democrats derided how the GOP planned to pay for the measure.

They might, if they felt that demand would support it. Regardless of what their tax rate is. Ksep in mind, large businesses are flush with capital now. Investment in new machinery has taken place and will continue to take place. None of this has anything to do with tax policy.

The whole reason corporate tax cuts are permanent is so the actions businesses take as a result of the tax changes, will also be permanent. Businesses may not be actively investing in their infrastructure because of the current tax rates.

Plus, individual tax cuts don't have the same impact on the economy as corporate tax cuts have, and the GOP had to comply with the Byrd Rule, so individual tax cuts were sunset. Much like with the Medicare reimbursement cuts that used to have a "Doc Fix" Bill passed every year to prevent it, the tax increases will likely not happen. It's political gamesmanship (aka bullshit) that both parties use to game the system.

Contrary to what the libs want to pretend, it was Sanders and another Dem who brought up the Byrd rule
and keep the individual tax cuts from being permanent.

I guess it's just a coincidence then that all of the companies I mentioned earlier are investing money in their companies and giving bonuses to employees 30 minutes after the presidents speech,.

As much as leftists vilify corporations employers, of course they are more likely to invest here if conservatives are in power accomplishing true anti-leftist reforms

And of course investments pay dividends - for everybody

.....and yet the economy and anyone's investment in it since FDR, do overwhelmingly better under dems that repubs.

Corporations almost assuredly do better under repubs because they are the the repub constituency. Still, corp. are a minority fraction of the American economy and...that actually serves Americans.

One must need a psychoanalysis of the modern right to understand the its love affair with the corp. which serves no one and nothing but itself and even sometimes, fucks their own investors.

I found this interesting and easy (for a tax dummy, like me) to understand:

quote:

Single Male, Renter, NOT a Business Owner, Teacher 50K
Saves: $1100

quote:

Family of Four (Both Work), Home Owners, NOT Business Owners, 75K
Saves: $2000

This next one confused me a bit. One is a "tech start-up", but they're listed as NOT Business owners. I guess one of them works for one?

quote:

Family of four (Both Work), Home Owners, NOT Business Owners, 1.5M
Saves: $2000

quote:

Family of four, Home Owners, BOTH Business Owners, 250K
Saves: $13000

Sounds like a "WIN" for the middle class to me.

Like the Democrats consulted the GOP through the entire process of passing the ACA?

bounty44 -> RE: Senate to vote soon on tax bill (12/21/2017 10:10:05 AM)

its impossible to tell but as democrats actually worked with republicans and some of the bill is reflective of that, id say no.

republicans disagreed with obamacare on fundamental principles, that wasn't the case here.

that no democrats voted yes has more to do with their spite of the president than it does with an overall philosophical disagreement with the content of the bill.

Quite. It's not like the republicans shut down the government for a fortnight because they didn't want to approve a budget that included funding for the healthcare reforms they'd failed to block by filibustering or anything.

BTW: how can they have a philosophical disagreement with a president who has no philosophy?

Republicans just figured out that if they stick together there is very little that they cannot accomplish

President Trump's first year was a smashing success. SO much winning!!!!

Seven more to go!

Or, if we want to acquiesce to the Leftist point of view: the president's philosophy is "racism". It's not a good philosophy, but it is one.

Since they pay enough lip service to this being fact, they should focus on defeating that philosophy; not claiming there is none.

Of course, since the facts don't bear the Leftists out, they are trying to back-peddle from it; kind of like "Global Warming ----> Ooops! The evidence doesn't support it? ----> Climate Change". "Trump's a racist ----> Ooops! The evidence doesn't support it? ----> He has no philosophy"

Like that.

Peace,

Michael

You are very smug with other peoples lives... I've a deal for you... A dear friend of mine, fighting ovarian cancer, is hanging onto life through an Obamacare subsidy. If in two years she still has her insurance I will be glad to kiss your ass and vote Republican in the next presidential election. If not then I get to shove your hypocritical Christian cross up your ass sideways. How about it?

This bill was meant to stimulate the economy, grow the GDP and promote job growth here at home. I hope it does all three.
