I would throw in that I think she is a lousy actress, but that is just me and I have been known to be wrong.

On the other hand, bright or not, she did something during the Vietnam War, capitalizing on her celebrity, that could have signalled the end of her career.

Whether or not I agree with her going to North Vietnam and having her picture taken on an anti-aircraft gun, I have a tremendous amount of respect for her doing what she believed in. Nobody died because of what she did.

I am in complete agreement with what you said with the exception of her acting skills. Most notably "The Morning After" "They Shoot Horses Don't They" and "Klute". I thought were her best. But we are dealing here with opinion.

I understand about your opinion about her acting.

I have never really seen her play anything but subtle variations on the same character.

Look at Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt or Marlon Brando or Sean Penn or... and notice the vast differences
in each of their characters. That to me speaks great acting. Tom Cruise or Kevin Costner or ... always plays Tom Cruise or Kevin Costner or...

p.s. Edited to add that I dont particularly car for Sean Penn, but he is a great actor.

I would agree with you as to the breadth of her abilities. Every time she attempts to work outside her "area of expertise" she does falter. My point was that when she confines her work to her strong suit she shines bright enough for the academy to notice.
Another in the same venue would be Larry Linville...every time he stepped away from the persona of Frank Burns he faltered but no one ever did a Frank Burns character better.
Some actors have depth some have breadth and a very few have both in any quantity. As for your choices I would agree absolutely with Brando and Penn a good strong maybe on Depp and the jury is still out on Pitt.
I am with you about having the ability to like someone's work without liking them as a person. From what I have read Mr. Penn seems a bit on the "rude arrogant butt head" side.
