Anyone thats familiar with college admissions also knows that legacies also get additional points in admissions.  People who's parents are able to donate large sums of money also get additional points as well.  Why in the world there aren't long standing complaints and tirades about legacies and high monetary donating to get their children those extra points parents I don't know.  Hell in the highly competitive schools being a minority in a geographical area they don't get a swarm of applications from also helps get a couple of extra points (and by minority that includes a white person living in the middle of Calcutta with a compelling story).

I'm on the fence about affirmative action but what I hate about it is the perception that every single thing I have earned was due to hard work, qualifying completely, and the fact I was black was just a cherry on top and not the reason I gained whatever success I've had (and trust me I've had to enumerate quite clearly to people precisely how I earned it and was just as if not more qualified than them). 

Affirmative action is about among a pool of applicants who already qualify or exceed the qualifications and having a priority for diversity.  But the thing that I always find interesting in the discussions about Affirmative Action is that based on the last study I heard about (mentioned on McNeil Leherer news hour) that my fuzzy brain says was done by the Dept of Labor that its actually white women that have benefited the most from Affirmative Action, not blacks as the perception is.

Just to address this point... A good friend of mine worked as a security guard. She was required to ask anyone entering or leaving the building for ID if they didn't have it in plain sight already. If it's the same sort of security job she likely has to request to see ID from everyone. If it's mall security, on the other hand, she can likely pick and choose who she asks for ID.

Well said.  Same with many sororities and fraternities.  But I'm not EVEN gonna touch that right now.  *laughs*  But yes...that was very well said, and it makes sense.

I heard mention of how to address blacks.  On the forms that I have filled out, some say "black" while others say "african american."  Now if it gave me a choice to pick between the two...I'd likely pick "black."  I'm not from Africa.  Would love to go there someday, though.  Probably have ancestors from there, though.  But I'm not from Africa.

"one" in that sentence was in reference to inmates Reference my first sentence:  "Every time you make a complaint about an inmates behavior, they play the race card. " I did not specify a race. I was making a point about the behavior I have seen in custody.

ALLLL races of inmates do it. If it's a black inmate/white officer, the officer is racist. If it's a white inmate/black officer, the officer is racist. If it's a black inmate/black officer, she's " a white lover who hates her own kind." Typical inmate mentality common among all races.

It is true that many different peoples have come to the U.S. and found success, Gris actually addressed this in his rant...However if you look at the fate of the peoples that have  beared the brunt of the historical racism of this country the results are disparagingly tragic...Both the Blacks as well as the Native Americans have not enjoyed the success of other "immigrants" who have reached our shores.

Anyone who bitches about the reverse racism suck it up! For Christ sake...You were born the "right" color, if you still don't get it...Then complain.  Waaaah! The Black people have their own award show! Waaaah! The black people have their own beauty pageant....Waaaaaah!.....The Black people have Historic black colleges.....Waaaaah!

I just love when someone speaks up and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt how some non-whites can be more racist than whites. Especially against their own. The use of the phrase "right color" shows that even some have no respect for their own race, let alone any others. There is no "right color" there is poverty across the board, regardless of color. However, only 'some' choose to play the race card in regards to why they are poor. Look at the after effects of Hurrican Katrina......there are people who got off their butts, found a job and got back on their feet TWO WEEKS after the tragedy. And there are others who are still on government funds almost TWO YEARS later.

I am further "amused" how the only ones who seem to play a race card are those considered to be "of race," such as "I only get pulled over because I am 'x' race," etc, etc. And don't even get me started on things like black awards shows or beauty pageants. Evidently not 'every' race truly wants equality. As it's been said, let someone have an all white awards show and watch the ensuing fury. Yet BET or Vibe can have an all black show (at which it seems someone almost always gets stabbed, beaten, shot, etc) yet that's not racist. I have never seen a White Entertainment Network either for that matter. Why is it that non-whites are the ones who cry about equality and then they work so hard to segregate themselves more than the white ever could?

Every race has their productive members and every race has their 'trash.' There is no "right color." It's time people get off their butts and do something to improve their own situation and realize that no one is going to do it for them. I LOVE reading in the news when Bill Cosby gives a speech somewhere. I just love how a self-made man like that can look at those who might blame others for their problems and tell them to get off their lazy butts and fix things for themselves.

Let's face it people, racism will never end because those considered to be "of race" will never let it die. Every time something bad happens or they don't get what they feel they deserved (but didn't work for) is suddenly all about race. No matter how much whites 'apologize' for slavery (which I personally will never do, as my ancestors never owned any and I can prove it) the issue will never be laid to rest. I am completely convinced that in the year 3000, if we even make it that far, slavery and it's 'effects' will still be used as an excuse as to why some are 'owed' something by the government.

Sad but true.

Hmmm up until 2001 it looks like we were running pretty much an all white academy award show as far as picking male actors.....

When will people get it through their thick lilly white skulls that damn near every institution has been run as a "whites only" membership club....People who talk about everyone having an equal avantage has never seen the inside of an urban school (Now I understand that in the conditions are similiar in poverty stricken areas of the country that are predominately white)  Someone coming out of that environment has to endure ten times more of a struggle and hardships than "codename V" could ever begin to imagine.

Most people do not want a "free" handout...But they would like to enoy the same opportunities that have been handed to you.

Why have black award shows or beauty pageants?....To present in a formal setting a chance to recognize the accomplishments and beauty of a people which largely went unnoticed....

The op has never seen a "white network" well until recently they were called ABC, NBC and CBS....Yes the times they are a changing....

Althought the majority of us have learned to speak in a politically correct manner....I am astounded by people who post as the op.

wasn't saying that it wasn't unfair more that it shouldn't be complained about from the other side because it really does more harm then good overall.

I agree with you, I don't want affirmative action in place either. I've gotten where I am on my own merits and I don't want that belittled by people assuming I just got in because of aa. I could go on more about why i disagree with it but don't want to bother everyone else here.

So let me are if I get this right . . . When a white actor loses to a black one, he's lost to a better actor, but when a black actor loses to a white one, it's racism at its finest? Is that your official, albeit misguided, opinion?

Interesting. What a lovely double standard you have there.

It's also interesting to see you talking about the opportunities that were "handed to me." That is the most racist thing you can say. So there are no poor white people in your mind hmm? Let's forget the fact that I had to join the military because I couldn't afford college, or the fact that even though my state of residency affords me free tuition to college now that I'm a veteran I still haven't been able to go because I can't afford to but the books. Oh yes, only the poor poor black people have it bad in today's world.
Let's all codle them and hand them everything simple because their skin is a darker tint than mine. We surely MUST owe them despite the fact that all the slaves are long since passed now and the majority of today's black American population have never even seen the "homeland" they cry about.
Troubles exist for every color, without exception. So why then must the "help" only be for those of "color" or "non-white" race? Apparently not everyone wants equality to truly be equal for everyone.

Alot of things people associate with race, on both sides of the fence are really socio-economic class issues. "But there are more poor blacks/hispanics/etc." Yes white people had a head start. Oh well, you can sit and complain about it or we can run and catch up.

You white people really shouldn't be complaining about these "unfair advantages" that people are getting due to race because it is really a hinderance on a whole promoting apathy and the victim mentality that keeps people focused on waiting to get what they are owed instead of going out and earning their own way.



I think this almost sums it up, and is the best post so far, except for the last paragraph. To me it should read "You "people" really shouldn't be complaining". It's my experience like was expressed that everyone has been shortended at some point and has some one or some group they could blame it on with or without merit. Now whether blacks are more short ended or whites, whatever, the number one single factor I've witnessed in regards to people failing is themselves, and blaming others for that failure. Once people stop the insanity of just standing still until they get what is "perceived" to be owed, then they can get somewhere until that point it doesn't matter.

Anyway, a post I 99% agree with, miracles happen afterall.

As it relates to college, I think we are making a race issue, out of something that isn't a race issue.
 
It's about groups, and the desire to have more representation of specific groups at the university level. Forget what color the groups is ... or sex ... or financial class ... those are deflections.
 
Example: Here at Rice, we have very high academic standards, and tuition that can put a middle-class family in the poor house ... unless, you are a baseball player. White, black, green dude from Mars ... if you can hit that ball, you get lower admission standards, free tuition, room and board, class scheduling advantages, tutors paid by the school (meaning, other students), free parking ... it's a very exclusive group, as long as that batting average stays above three-hundred. This is a group that is desired. That's what is important.
 
There aren't advantages given to the poor or minorities, because they are poor or minorities. It may seem that way, but the reality it that they represent a group that is desired ... desired for political purposes, or feelings of guilt ... or whatever. They key here is, you can't take it out on a group that is desired, because they are desired ... any more than you can take it out on baseball players, because they play baseball, and Rice is a national power.
 
If you do, you throw out the potential for them to be anything else but a minority, or poor, or a baseball player.
 
So, it may seem that way at times, but this has nothing to do with race, or class. If someone is getting something, and you aren't ... they probably belong to a group, and you are probably a dime-a-dozen. I'm a white chick with wealthy foster parents, that isn't a native Texan. I'm not an engineering student. Part of my tuition is payed by the government (my understanding is that the school waits a year to get paid). I don't belong to any group ... I don't get shit ... I need a car to drive me from my parking spot. I'm a dime-a-dozen, and get all I'm worth to the school.

here's a thought i had on the subject of hbcus. i go to a university that was historically a women's college. we now accept men, have men on the faculty, etc. nobody bitches because the university was started at a time when women couldn't get a good education alongside men in men's schools.

seriously. if you're going to bitch about hbcus, bitch about historically women's colleges, too. i mean, really, us women must be trying so hard to take opportunities away from the men.

I think the biggesst misunsertanding in this thread has been caused by people trying to make the numbers personal. For all of those who are hating Affirmative Action and historically black colleges...have you ever been personally passed over because of any of those extra points?
 
Me, personally, I identify as a white female...but my black friends will tell you that I'm "high yellow".[8D] I am actually part of another minority aside from being a woman...I am a Native American (Cherokee). Rather than allow the Cherokee nation, whose finanacial status is questionable, to pay for my college and add few points to my affirmative action score...I just decided to identify as white and let someone else use the money to lend a helping hand to someone who's scores didn't add up.

Color and race defining have been a part of my life since I was small. I went to a public school in New Orleans and have since moved onwards and upwards, but those things stay with you. I believe in identifying yourself culturally, and I find it sad that sometimes I know more about black history than some young black people do. The looks of amazement when I describe the movement centered in Birmingham, Alabama at the 16th St. Baptist Church would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Wow, that was a ramble. Sorry guys and gals!
 
The bottom line is that when you make a society of people dependant on the system and the system fails, what happens to the people? I present Hurricane Katrina.
