It's a simple question...why is it racist to consider black colleges over white colleges? Why is there an advantage? Over any?

Gris, it was a few years back when the subject of HBCU's came up and I didn't at that time understand what their exact purpose was in today's world...So I asked one of the sharper people I know on the planet ...She is of Liberian and Zimbabwean decent....graduated from MSU undergrad and law school....So now I am taking her word on why the importance of some of th HBCU's....Is that they provide more support for a student who might be sharp but their high school education was not enough or geared towards preparing them for college....So by giving the students some additional support they are put on a fast track where they will either sink or swim.... I know that I am missing on some of the other points that were brought up...but this was one of the main points that stuck with me. However some of these universities are considered to be at the forefront in providing a tremendous education.

Why do black people have to justify themselves to white people? Why is this always the way? Provocative questions are always enjoyable. But OP? You don't have a point of reference. I didn't ask that. I asked why it was okay to have an all black college but not an all white college? I asked why it was racist to have one over the other. There's currently 86 opinions (based on the number that stands as I write this). There's been more than a few opinions on this subject. Most have diverged from the topic. Not unexpected. Several comments have come in that these colleges do not ascribe to blacks only. I didn't know that. They should market that.

greetings griswold, hbcus, as have been pointed out time and again, are not all black colleges. they are historically black colleges. there is a difference. as i mentioned before, they (to me) are no different than historically women's colleges (like the one i attend) that now accept men and have male members. hbcus accept white students and many have white faculty members. any college or university that's existed longer than the last 40-100 years is historically white and historically male by definition, which is why there aren't any self-proclaimed historically white or historically male colleges. it's pretty much an accepted fact. just like hbcus and historically women's colleges, historically white and historically male colleges also now accept other races and the opposite gender. pretty much, it has to do with the culture you came out of. historically white/male colleges came out of a desire to educate white males at a time when religious institutions were pretty much the only place this happened. historically black colleges were started when black people couldn't get an education at historically white colleges. historically women's colleges were started when women couldn't get an education at historically male colleges. in that time, we've come at least a few steps in the direction of equality, and now most colleges accept students of all race and gender. the reason hbcus and historically women's colleges are more publicized as such has to do, in part, because they are a more recent development, because issues with everybody not having access to education still exist, and the fact that they exist as historically black/women's is a testament to dealing with such harsh issues in education (which are not always limited to race or gender but often social status, wealth, etc.) annabelle.

The question is neither bitter, happy, pleasant, mean or even striking. It's a question that clearly makes 90% of the people who responded to it arbitrary, moreover, judgemental. Black people shouldn't justify themselves to anyone anymore than white, asian or any other group should feel the need to justify themselves to any other group. I just asked a simple question; Why is it racist to have an all white college, but it's not racist to have an all black one? It shouldn't be...but it clearly is.

Historically Black colleges were created because it answered a need among the African American community at that time. Blacks were not allowed admittance into the all-white colleges/universities of the day. So, the racism that was imposed upon us at the time created the need for separate educational systems. And by "racism" I mean a system of exclusion imposed by one race or group of people upon another race or group of people based upon incorrect beliefs of superiority and privilege. Hi Little Onyx. Mine was more or less an open ended question. Encompassing such issues as affirmative action, African American centered beauty contest, scholarship programs for disadvantaged young people, etc..Basically subjects that seem to raise the ire of some white people. They demand explaination as to why black people seem to have these "special" advantages without the realization that these same people who seem to be given sooooo much, were also the same people for many generation not allowed to be educated under penalty of severe punishment, and when the powers that be so "graciously" allowed these people to educate their children, it was only in the most rudimentary, substandard way. They were not allowed to own homes in many areas of this country, and the list goes on. Yet, African Americans are asked by white people who don't take time to study historical facts, (past and present history) that would offer them the explainations that they so crave. Can we imagine a life where everything you needed for basic living had to be fought for? Against people who didn't even view you as human beings? For Griswold my question to you. Why do you want to know? What difference would it make in your life if black folks didn't have their own schools? Then think. How different would life be for all of us if black people, or other disenfranchised people in this country never had to fight for basic freedoms.

greetings jack45, america is a country of immigrants. non-hispanic whites are not native americans. therefore, unless we're going to state that nobody but non-hispanic whites is american, this country does not belong to non-hispanic whites. it belongs to americans - who are of many different ethnicities, and have always been of many different ethnicities. respectfully, annabelle.
