What sort of things in/on a person might you look for in the vanilla life to recognize someone that's into BDSM?

Subtle protocols between a couple in public.

I had a couple of co-workers who were living together in the past, I strongly suspect he might have been knowingly or unknowingly being tamed into a pet of some kind. My first clue was when she started painting his nails on break. Later the hair was dyed and she would talk about picking out his clothes for him.

The BDSM addicts are usually scrawny with a lack of personal hygiene and nutrition and walk up to me, shaking and itching, solicting offers of sucking my cock for that endorphin hit of being paddled.

Edited to Add : They have also usually degenerated to street prostitution so can clearly be identified by excess leather and latex coupled with tacky and cheap colors.

I must say I like Asher's and verysweet's answers the most.  Very funny.

I kind of identify with this question because there's this guy (in my mind I call him the Barbarian) who I've only seen twice and for some weird reason, I'm getting these vibes from him.  I know it's ridiculous because I've never even talked to him before but for just some reason...  Like now there's BDSM-dar or something lol

I don't know, I'm clearly nuts and silly.

sweetnsensual...  you never know.  A Funeral Director that i met through work nailed me, well, not literally   but knew i was a submissive, he himself is Dominant.  We are now friends, and as he knows i have an electrical tape fetish is always bringing me rolls of pretty colored tape at work.     Maybe your Barbarian is a kinky ass freak like the rest of us.  Ahh, and as for the FD knowing what i was, he said it was my eyes that gave me away.

Ha Sweetnsensual..I had to laugh about your BDSM-dar comment! Master and I often comment on how we run into "Dom-types" and "sub-types" outside of the environment where that subject would normally come up. Maybe it's comments they throw out,  body language, who knows (?) but before long they are telling you how they liked to be spanked, or asking if you've been to a dungeon.

For me, the dead give away is the pursing of the lips and the Ohhhhh that escapes when I pull out a paddle.   If they reach for it and start swishing it, they're dominant.  Sensually stroking it or promptly bending over something tends to indicate a submissive....... And no, I'm not joking.

I'd suggest stripping and kneeling to all of them and see what happens

Were you actually trying to ask how you know if someone is into bdsm?  An addict of anything isn't a good thing and that question is a bit confusing.  The real answer is you can't know other than asking.

I saw a construction worker a couple of years ago driving a big pick up with a license plate that said DOMINANT. I figure that was enough of a hint about him. Had he gone into the gas station, I might of followed him just to see what he looked like, instead he turned into the construction site so I've often wondered if he wore his leather to work.

Adding: Truthfully, nothing can identify people. I look like the typical soccer mom, in fact I am one. Watched a basketball game yesterday, will watch Saturday's also. Chatted to friends watching their ums play. I don't show up in a corset and ball gag, that would be inappropriate. But in general terms I have found over the years that the people who try to portray an image through exaggerated dress do so to compensate for not actually being that way. The people who have it don't have to flaunt it.

The simplest way to find out is just ask. 'course you always run the risk of looking like a yutz (or a pervert (or both)) when you guess wrong.

I always wondered about a former coworker. She wore one of those tiffany necklaces that have the thick heavy chain with the heart tag at the front. And it sure looked like a damned collar. I asked her once about it ("That's an interesting necklace. Is there a story behind it?") and she stammered out a reply tripping over her words, which just raised my suspicions.

Seeing her interact with her husband was interesting. He was never really overtly dominant, more of an old style traditional relationship. She'd be sitting down and he'd ask her from across the room to go get her a beer and she'd jump up and do it immediately. So lots of subtle little clues.

I finally asked her point blank if it was a collar. Her response - "Rude". I'm starting to think, "Oh shit. I guessed wrong. She's pissed about getting asked this, time to backpedal."

She continued, "So-and-so (another co-worker) used to ask me that all the time."

My mouth dropped. Him? I thought He's into this? That's one of the most white bread milk toast sheltered guy I've ever met. And he is asking?

She continued, "So (other coworker) told him that he should stop being rude, it comes from Tiffany's and he can go check the website if he doesn't believe her."

I paused and reflected. Clearly, he was just making the extremely rude implication that it had been purchased from a pet store and kept harping on that idea, apparently with no other questions asked. He wasn't coming at it from a bdsm perspective, it was a "WTF are you wearing?" perspective. She appeared completely oblivious to the concept and question as well, so I just dropped the subject.

Whoops.

'course I still haven't come out to her about my extra curricular relationships, so maybe at some point when I do she'll fess up and I'll be vindicated. Or not.
