I dunno. Personally, I sort of always thought of myself as being a natural born opinionated jackass. It took years of hard work for me to learn how to be dominant.

There is a lot of insight and self awareness in what you said about yourself. That rocks.

I have always had difficulty accepting authority and appeared often (to others) to be dominant. It took someone submitting to me for me to actually allow the dominance to manifest in a more obvious way.

SirKaton,

We can put individual definitions a side and directly look into word "slave" .

1. a person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bond servant.
2. a person entirely under the domination of some influence or person: a slave to a drug.

When there is slavery , there is no freedom. A submissive is a free person who submits another person without giving up her freedom. A slave is not a free person. Of course in this modern age you will say consent is a must, so how is this slavery really going to work? Basically person who wants to become a slave will give up her own freedom willingly. But the keyword here is freedom. There is no freedom in slavery.

Of course most of us are romantics. We enjoy the word slave but dont want to really give up any freedom. So we use the word "slave" in any situation as long as it excites us. If its real definition was followed there would have been few modern day slaves who gave up their all freedom (willingly of course). Thats why we put technical arguments a side and enjoy the word "slave" any way we want to for the sake of our personal happiness.

Hermes, your comments are well said and received.  Do you find putting away the technical definition is a matter of necessity to function in this lifestyle where typical conventions aren't the nrom?

No I do not think its a necessity to function in this lifestyle, but enforcing technical definitions on other people can create dysfunctional situations. I am saying putting it away is not a necessity because once you abandon it, you might miss a chance to learn from it. Knowing what slavery is, and giving her a chance to express herself in it, and understanding why she has a desire to give up her freedom , and why she also has fears towards losing that freedom.. It can open doors to a level One can not easily reach if just abandons it as being not a norm.

Is it wrong to say one can be a submissive, but not necessarily a slave, but one cannot be a slave without being a submissive? Submission in my understanding is to a certain point not beyond what has been decided upon between a Dom/me and the sub (the whole concept of TPE). Slavery is a step beyond what typically is considered "normal" submission.

Actually, yeah - it's wrong.

Submission and slavery are only different in the individual or the individual relationship - meaning that one's submissive is another's slave, with exactly the same traits, qualities, behaviors and "degree of submission".

Yes, they *are* different - but what those differences *are* are impossible to pin down, because they are too subjective and individual.

Also - not all those who are slaves could also be called/identify as "a submissive".  So, the "all slaves are submissive" bit isn't accurate either.  All slaves are responsible to their owners - whether that includes submissive attitudes, behaviors, or personalities is totally up to those in the relationship.
