I disagree. Marriage is a legal contract first and foremost. This is why I was married by a JoP and not a religious person : because marriage doesn't have to include god or religion.

I hope to god this doesnt make its way to the PA ballot.

There was talk about it...then it was tabled. (for now).  frankly PA has more serious issues. Such as utility dereg which is raising bills 60%.    Property tax, roads and bridges.  The loss of factories.  We have some big issues here and the state legislature is so gridlocked the governor Rendell threatened to by decree extend the rate caps.   The PA congress did nothing.

People need to get over the gay marriage item. Why? because often when there is a marriage the wonderment is- did he marry a woman or a man.   So culturally those who are suspected to be gay- or bi, this wont go away..as some churches have married gays for years now.

lets take job benefits.  easy solution.   any such employee may have say 10k in benefits, you choose which you want. but no employee can go over the limit for all to be equal.

Some straight people are afraid that others will turn gay.  It wont happen. I promise.     1 experience wont make a person gay. It is what you fantasize about.

its kind of funny. My bro and cousin was down in FL in a tourist area. Every place was sold out on the beach.  Then they bumped into a gay friendly place. A nice old lady. She assumed the 2 were lovers and rented a room to them.  They did not correct her. Let her think as she wished.  But they got a room when all else was sold out.  :-)

I dont care to see men kissing men in public. A hug fine.  We are too paranoid in the US that every touch is for sex.

marriage tho is not purely a benefit there are legalisties that being single is better.

Ya know as long as we are voiding out contracts- lets void the hedge funds and the casino bets the walls street done.

DUDE, I can not take fire insurance out on YOUR house and then collect if it burns.  THAT IS WHAT WALL STREET HAS DONE.   High risk betting, with billions.

Dude, I don't know what country you are living in, but in the US, unless you have a marriage license (issued by the govt.), you are not legally married.  You may love your partner, live with your partner, etc, but you do not have a married household, and the tax benefits (amoung other things) that that allows you.

Kittensol,
As a legeal contract, calling it a 'domestic partnership' licence will change nothing. If all you wanted was legeal benifits, you get your licence, go to the JoP, and get it done. If you wish to also Marry, for religious or spirtual or social or whatever reasons, arrange a Marriage in your church, your home or the local park or historical home or whatever, buy a $2,000 dress you will wear one time and get it done. All I am saying is the two should be seperated.
Now, otoh, if we keep calling it 'marriage' for strait people but give gay people 'Domestic Partnership' licences, as so many fence sitters suggest - i promise you, there will be a hoard of differences in leagal rights before you can turn around twice. Seperate but equal never works.

faery -
but can you turn people gay by bringing up their profile, touching their pic, and saying their name three times? or is everyone online safe?

Puella, when I lived in Cleaveland, I had the most delightful GYN. He was Muslim, and Indian Immegrent. I am very VERY big on being completely out to ALL of my docs. I tell them all on the very first visit, and if they have a problem with any of it, well, next week I do a very first visit with a different doc. simple as that.
I was living in a Poly house at the time. I told him I was poly, and defined it - married to or loving between more than just two. He said, 'Oh, yes. American Law, very stupid. Koran say, I may have four wives. American Law say - only one. Why is this?'
I said, 'The goverment can only tell you what marriages they will licence and recognize - they can't actually tell you who to marry. Marriage is between two - or more - people, and God.'
He looked at me very seriously, then said, 'You, are a VERY SMART lady!'
I always wondered what his conversation with his wife sounded like that night when he got home....

Then again I am of the belief that if people would stop fighting against gay marriages and just let them happen, they would no longer be a big deal. The only reason they raise such a fuss now is because there is opposition. Once there is none, they will fade into the sunset and no one will give damn either way.

Hmmm... except that people are having to fight for letting them happen in the first place. It's not like you can 'just let something happen' when it's impossible for it to happen in the first place.

Obviously what I was trying to say made more sense i my own head than it came out on here.
The religious wing doesnt want the marriages to be allowed. They dont want all the focus on them, and in the few states they are permitted, they are used as a draw. I wonder if these people who object so strenuously relaize that if they would stop fighting and simply alow the gay marraige to be legal but kept out of theiir churches and the like, they would fade from the forefront. Out of sight out of mind, like gays in the military.

I am of the conviction that if you support denying rights to others then you have no basis upon which to assert your own.

Besides, as has been pointed out by others, who is it really hurting?  The only thing it is doing is hurting the religious sensibilities of others.  Fine.  Freedom means you have the right to bellow and squawk about others using their freedom in a way you do not approve of.  It does not mean you have the right to take action to prevent others from exercising their rights.  Homosexuals have no right to demand that churches marry them against the churches will (because that would violate the religious freedom of the church) but conversely no one has the right to demand that the government or other entities (e.g. churches that would gladly marry gay couples) discriminate against homosexuals.  The government has no business engaging in prejudicial discrimination against its citizens.

To all my homosexual friends:  Take heart.  Regardless of the outcome of these particular ballots, you are going to win this fight.  This is playing out much like the fight for women’s right to vote played out.  The denial of women’s right to vote was chipped away in several places (e.g. Wyoming and Colorado) before the Nineteenth Amendment was passed.  The same thing is happening now.  It may take five years.  It may take ten or twenty years but we will get there.  You may lose a few battles along the way but you’re going to win the war.

Hey, if gays want to marry....let them, that way they can also pay the higher married rate of income tax, give away a perfectly good house ,and half their earnings if it doesn't work out.
I can see the Divorce Attorney's lobby working to legalize it in  all 50 states!
Seriously, with everything else we have to deal with why would people bother with all the campaigning against allowing someone to marry no matter the sexual preference, it is really just legal recognition of 2 people sharing their possessions and dividing them if it falls apart.

I would like to apologise, with all the sincerity I can muster in this instance, to the Godsquad, their agents and representatives on behalf of all those deviants from the Lord's word known as transsexuals. The possibility of the likes of me marrying a woman, or following a few administration changes to my legal status a man, is something that must truly annoy and frustrate said victims of my sinful nature.

That this then makes a mockery of their stance on the notion of two men or two women marrying one another is something about which I am also apologetic to the best of my ability so to be.

Yes folks, the argument for gay marriage is significantly strengthened by the existence of the likes of me. For a ban to make any sense would require not recognising my medical condition and the treatment recommended for it.

So, what Florida has to ask itself first is whether it recognises any right for the likes of me to be regarded as female by law and to be thereby endowed likewise with the normal legal rights that appertain to any natural female - or whether it finds against this notion?

If it finds against, it must take immediate action to prevent transsexual women from perpetrating what is a fraudulent identity and arrest all those within the state engaged upon providing treatment whereby such fraud might be enabled - if it finds for, then it must follow that same sex marriage cannot be banned without showing logical inconsistency.

if gay marriage bothers people so much...why doesnt marriage between 2 different racies  bother them? these multi cultural marriages have the same rights....
Most people who object to "marriage" vs "civil union" use, state their reasons for objection is a religious one defining marriage between a man and a woman.   So, the issues aren't exactly the same, and still plenty of people have issues with people of different ethnicities or cultures getting married, though they are less apt to speak up about it.    M

I am very happy being married, thank you very much; I am not interested in a 'domestic licence'. On top of the whole romantic arrangements (which are not to be spat on, as far as I'm concerned, because love is part of the equation for me), marriage is a legal contract; it's not me who decided this, it's the law. Now, if you want to redefine the whole meaning of the word 'marriage', all the more power to you. But it will be an uphill battle. 'God' and religion weren't brought into marriage until relatively late in our culture. It was ALWAYS a legal contract. Maybe it contradicts your ideal and personal view of it... but that's your opinion, not a fact.

Here in Arkansas, we have a proposition on the ballot to ban unmarried couple from being foster parents.  The group that got this on the ballot has made it clear that it was aimed at gay couples.  I'm voting against it for many reasons.  We have a shortage of foster homes in this state, I could care less about a couple's marital status or sexual orientation when applying to become foster parents, and I am tired of this devisive nonsense from Christian fundamentalists or any special interest group for that matter.

SB4U,

Nice to know we at least agree on this. (I voted against it... but that's obvious since I've said before that I've been a part of a group that's been trying to get it blocked on a Constitutional basis. If it passes, we can expect a long, drawn out, very expensive [for AR taxpayers] legal battle.)
