I am going to my gyno tomorrow to get on birth control. I’m nervous because I’ve never had to do this before, and I’m not sure what to expect.

A little about me… I am a plus size girl, so I’m not sure the ring would work for me at this point--though I have heard very good things about it…and I have a (non-cancerous) cyst on an ovary… so I am not sure if that will cause any issues with bc? My mom and grandma had fertility issues with their first children (both had “Oops Babies” after, though…lol) and I am hesitant to put something in my body that will cause issues later down the road.

I’m not positive on the reliability of non-hormonal types of bc, but I would rather stay away from them--as long as that is effective-- as I have heard the horror stories about weight gain, crazy mood swings, and bleeding for months at a time.

I’m wondering if anyone can tell me what they like, and what has (AND HAS NOT!!!) worked for them. What was it, did you like it, was it hard to do, did it hurt, what were the side effects? etc.

Even if you liked a hormonal based b/c…will you let me know so I can discuss it with my doc tomorrow?

Ideally I’d like something that didn’t cause any weight gain, no mood swings, NO BABIES, no loss of sex drive (because that would be counter-productive, duh!) and no crazy long periods. I'd like something that won't last in my system for months and months afterward, if possible?  Am I being too picky, does something like this exist??

What do you think about IUDs? Sponges? Diaphrams? Are they hard to use?  Painful during sex?  Do they stop you from enjoying it?  Is it awkward to have to go and put it in?

He and I have discussed this, and we’re going to use two types of bc, just to be on the safe side. Can you tell me what you think would be the best?

Thanks so much!
~anne

Ive used bc pills... not for those not disciplined to taking pills every day.

Ive used a diaphram... a bit akward, but not that bad. just messes up the moment if your not prepared ahead of time. my bf at the time didnt like to go down on me because of the spermicide. typically you cant leave it in longer than 24 hours. if your uterus is tilted, it can be a bit harder to insert and take out.

Sponges.. good for a quick fix. they can be on the expensive side if you have sex frequently. same 24 hour period i believe.

The ring i havent heard much about. and i dont believe you would wish to use them with a sponge or diaphram.

If i had to think about it now (thankfully im beginning my journey to the other end of the spectrum) i would go with an IUD. no muss, no fuss... can lead to slight cramping initially. easy to remove and they are plastic so its not like the IUD of my mothers era... or maybe grandmothers for the younger crowd.

The Depo-provera shots are still available. Many women have break through bleeding initially. But they are supposed to be good for three months at a clip.

If you are considering BC pills, i would go for the newer ones, like Seasonale.... lessons the number of periods you have.

If you smoke, i would suggest you dont go near BC pills and stick with other methods. Why take the risk when there are so many other options?

http://www.mirena-us.com/index.jsp ...... the link for the IUD.

i was on the pill about 23-24 years ago for approx. 5 years.  i have regrets about taking them, but i was also a smoker, and overweight.

PLEASE discuss all the long term effects birth control may create with your gynocologist.  Diaphrams might be messy and a bit awkward until you get the hang of inserting it correctly, but definitely worth considering.  I wish I had.

Thanks ladies!

I've hit on a few old threads here and it seems like maybe a diaphram would work, and I am also interested in the IUD.  I am going to talk to her about both options tomorrow.  I really don't want to have to deal with hormones and going crazy and stuff.  LOL.

I just got off of the phone with the NuvaRing people and they had nothing of import to say in regard to weight requirements.  Not even a minimum weight, but the woman did go on and on about the risk for heart problems and strokes... so I am thinking that is a no for me.

I've pretty much decided that hormonal bc isn't for me... I'm really worried about what that will do to my body down the road....

I'm not currently on any form of birth control, mainly because I have no need for it at this time.

When I was married, I was on the pill, and was very careful to take it like clockwork every day.  I still ended up pregnant. Twice.

LOL.. many women had Pill babies. they are more effective now, but, my last experience with them had the Dr starting me out on low dose, even when i warned her i would bleed through. and i did.. for three months.. until she gave me a heavy enough dose. so not worth the mess of having a period constantly for three months!

I have used "old fashioned" (i.e. non hormonal) IUD for years, because I did not want hormonal birth control. No problems to report so far, aside from 2-3 really painfull periods after the first IUD was placed. It seems like after that my uterus got accustomed to them, and all went back to normal.
No problems getting pregnant after they were removed, and no surprise pregnancies either.

Some doctors insist on giving them only to woman who have given birth at least once, as the cervix will be less tight, and placement will be easier. However, I had my first prior to any pregnancies, and there were no problems with insertion. You just need to find a doctor with enough experience.

One of the reasons women get pregnant while on the pill is that antibiotics counteract the effectiveness of the pill. If you are treated with an antibiotic, make sure you are using that second form of contraception!!

Here is a little more info for you:

No one ever got pregnant from giving a blow job, but I do know a female that got pregnant
after a girl who had just finished a blow job went down on her! Guess she did not swallow
well enough!

Now on to something serious.......My ex was on birth control pills for a number of years. When we decided to try for kids she went off them. She did not get her period for 4 years after she went off them, then had the devil of a time getting knocked up. I know it was her issue because while we were apart at that time I knew who she was doing and all the men she was doing had already become fathers with other females.

I would say barrier methods have the least long term issues!

I had an "old fashioned" (i.e. non hormonal) IUD for 7 years after giving birth.  I had strong cramping for a while after it was first inserted and occassional, random cramps for the rest of the time.  I sometimes felt a "pinching" sensation but that was also occassional and random.

I've been on the pill and smoked and was over 35 and I survived lol.  It really is risky though.  I first went on it at 16 years old.  I did gain weight (10 lbs) and had to try a few different pills before I found one that worked well with the least amount of spotting.  Despite being on and off antibiotics during my pill use, I never had a "pill pregnancy" and when I went off the pill, I got pregnant right away.  (My sister is convinced that the severe headaches she was having were related to the pill and she went off it and had her hubby get snipped.)

I've used the sponge (when it was on the market) and by far, it was my favorite method of bc.  I only hated when I anticipated sex, put one in and then nothing happened.  It was supposed to be okay to have in for 24 hours (I think that's the duration, it's been a while) but I didn't really want to leave it in that long, so it would be wasted.

Other than my current method of bc (tubes tied and cauterized), I'd probably use an IUD again, unless the sponge is/goes back on the market.

Good luck with what ever you choose.

I have one friend that says she is immune to the pill, and in fact every woman in her family is.  They all have lots of kids, so I sort of believe them.  Not that there are not other forms of bc, but this could also be a factor for "pill babies"

LOL

One of my best friends went on the depo shot and had a period for 3 months.  That is NOT something I am willing to go through.

Thank you Sandra, I think the IUD is the route I am going to discuss with her.

I have had past issues with this doctor, and I have an appointment for another-- but that is in DECEMBER.  A lot can happen between now and then, so I am trying to be responsible now--thus the reason I am going to the one I do not like.  If she won't give me the IUD right away, do you think a diaphram would work in the mean time?

I have a lot of cramping and other issues during my periods... this won't cause it to come lose will it?  What happens during sex, can it come out?

Thanks for the help!

hlen5,

Thank you for this!  I don't think I want to go the route of something that is so iffy.  If I forget to take the pill, or if something counteracts it... the consequences are not something I want to face just yet!

Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you so much CB-- this is the type of thing that scares me about hormonal bc.  I'm not willing to wait 4 years while something works itself out of my system!

You know, I have strong cramping anyway... I wonder if it would be worse or the same...  something to think about.

You know, I've taken the Plan B pill twice...and both times I had such an intense migraine aferwards that I was afraid  I was going to throw up and have to take the damn thing again.  This is another reason I don't want to take hormones.

Was there a reason it was taken off of the market?  I mean other than it didn't work.  Was there some issue with side effects?  Is this something that can be purchased without a perscription?

I used the pill and didn't have any problems with it.
I also used the IUD - didn't hurt going in, no problems with cramping - my only problem was eventually it fell out - literally.
I ended up with a hysterectomy - best form of bc ever!!   Of course you can only access it if you have had your kids and have a medical reason for it. *sigh*  got to love that enterocele!

Ok... here's my next question.  I am looking at the planned parethood website and it seems that there are two types of IUD's...one that is copper and one that is plastic, with a low does of progestin.

Obviously there is a difference in hormones...  What does the copper do to you, though?  Is it a natural spermicide?

The copper one lasts (it says) up to 12 years.  What happens if I want it removed?

What are the odds of this causing fertility problems down the road? (If you know, it's a long shot, but I thought I would ask...)

Interestingly enough, the IUD is in the same grid as a vasectomy, female sterilization and the implant... so it's pretty high up there in effectiveness...PP claims less than 1 per 100 end in pregnancy.

" The progestin in the Mirena IUD helps prevent pregnancy. ...Progestin also prevents pregnancy by thickening a woman's cervical mucus. The mucus blocks sperm and keeps it from joining with an egg." (from the PP website)

So...(and sorry if this is gross, but I'm being blunt.  I'm tired of having to guess and wonder about this stuff) speaking on oral sex... does this change the taste of the female?  Is it gross?
