It still just reinforces the idea that to be successful and happy in life all a woman has to do is hold sexual power over a man.  It's rather disgusting if you ask me, and merely propagates the idea that some women only want a man for his annual salary.

Sorry, but bragging about all the nice little expensive "toys" someone buys you makes you look like a gold digging harlot rather then someone who claims to "love" the actual man they're with.

Van, you're mighty young to be running around judging people you don't even know.  Why don't you come back when you've grown up enough to realize that you don't know everything.

I need to egg someone on at least once a day here.  Otherwise, people would think I wasn't feeling well.

Nothing wrong with having squidgy buttocks, LP.  Bony arses are no good to anyone.

Really?  Well I am even less Diana-like...  gosh, I thought C got all the icky lovey stuffs...

ANYWAY!  No one has ever offered me an automobile, but if at some point I am with someone who can afford such a gift, I will say Thank you very much.   In the meantime, ebony knitting needles, crackberry apps, pictures of guinea pigs...  all tokens of esteem are welcome!

You know Prince Charles took Camilla to Greece once.  He introduced her to the crowd as, simply, "Camilla" - and the crowd burst out laughing.  Apparently 'Camilla' sounds like the Greek word for 'camel'.

Poor woman.  It probably didn't help that she looks a bit like a camel, either.

Sorry - off subject.

I think there's a difference between someone offering gifts and tributes, and someone straight out demanding them. When someone does something on their own volition, they are doing something that makes them and hopefully the recipient feel good. When someone demands something, the receiver is happy, but the giver... maybe or maybe not.

Everyone complains about the do-me sub. The other side of the coin is the gimme dom/me

Well TM, you've stirred up quite a thread. TM and I have exchanged a few emails, and I've followed her posting for some years, so I'd just like to say that I don't think she's a gold digger. She's had some ups and downs in life, and right now things are very good for her, and she's set her experience out as an example. Clearly, though, her experience cannot be a template. Why?

That's simple -- her post is about a Cadillac Sub. What femdom (or any woman for that matter) wouldn't be happy with such man? Its hard to argue with it, but at the same time her post does have a threatening undertone -- because not all of us drive in the Cadillac class. No wonder VanIsleKnight was rubbed the wrong way, he's 22. According to the NYT, the jobless rates for young men under 24 is now a whopping 35%. Some of these guys are probably saddled with student loans, too. He certainly is not going to woo a woman financially.

Still, I think we can all be glad for TM, and I think, too, we need not be too threatened by Cadillac Subs --- for as others have inferred -- we can rely on our own ingenuity to strike a good impression.

Footnote: I think if TM had been more mindful of VanIsleKnight's age and station, she might not have been so derisive in her retorts to him, and I have to admit, its a bit hard when a femcom uses the dreaded Cadillac sub to make a point.

So, some Domme's are golddiggers/harlots whose time can be bought just like any other chick on craigslist erotic services.  Got it.  ;D

Yet again comes another vulgar, un-educated, intolerant post in response to a person expressing the feelings of there heart.

That type of attitude is why you never achieve a relationship with a person that will ever amount to any thing, BDSM or vanilla.

TexasMaam never demanded, expected, required, or made compulsory any of the gifts that were given to her.

Lockit expressed very eloquently how and why the gifts were given.  Something that i doubt you will ever understand or get.

Quote Lockit

"He saw what was in my heart and he gave me what would most please me. I call that the greatest gift, besides a person... that anyone ever gave me. He gave me what was in my heart, from his heart. "

Well since you mentioned it, I'm not a Domme, I'm an "any woman," but if a man offered me a Cadillac (or any pricey fancy gift), I would feel extremely guilty taking it.  It's little bitty things, like daisies or extra cuddle time, that I love the most.....or a set of those big, goofy looking salt & pepper shakers meant to be used in the kitchen (I love to cook) so I can think of the giver every time I use them.  They cost the least but mean the most to me.  I didn't mean to go off-topic, but I was just answering his question.

I don't believe that Texas Maam's point was about the impressive dollar amount, though I understand that could be intimidating to less well off subs. The point was about submissives who do not expect "tit for tat" (such an unfortunate phrase! lol) for what they do for their dominant.

One of the most touching "tributes" I had was when a former drummer with early onset Parkinson's Disease, talked a group he knew to allow him, when he was having a good day, to sit in for their drummer and record one of their songs with lyrics altered by him to reflect *me*... and his description of the excitement and the agony while playing, not knowing whether he would be able to make it through to the end of the song... That they actually preferred and kept the changes was just the cherry on top.

Your partner, TexasMaam, in a most tactless fashion, held up the gifts you've given her as yardsticks by which to measure others.  Simultaneously, she derided those not in the same monetary position as the two of you.  She describes your relationship as would an accountant - one of capital gains.  Read her OP.  I'm guessing the two of you don't measure each other the way the OP comes across.  However, in the absence of any background to the contrary, I came to the same conclusion as VanIsleKnight.

Personally, I don't think it's anyone's business what vehicles and other, expensive gifts you give each other, and hence why I wrote:  "I believe these are private matters best celebrated within the sanctity of the relationship and not used as public status icons".  Your partner clearly felt differently though and decided to spew them all over this forum.  So, if you put it out there, people will comment on it, especially when it comes across as tactlessly and judgmentally as presented in the OP.

Elan.

I like chocolate brownies and smores.  Smores are delicious.  Especially when you use Aero bars. :)

On topic, I'm not sure what else there is left to discuss, several sides made their case and the heart of the topic is more or less done now.  Maybe discuss different types of gift ideas for the future when we're racking our brains trying to figure out what to get that special someone?

*thinks about things that isn't clothes or personal jewelry*

  • I've bought annual gym passes for my friends on their birthdays, they were beyond ecstatic after that.
  • I used to think engraving was cool, then I realized it's not all what it's hyped up to be.
  • I also wrote a short story and am getting it illustrated and binded for my little sister's Christmas present.
  • Friend got his girlfriend a crystal rose for their anniversary.  Was gorgeous.
  • My other friend had a naughty calender of herself made for her long term boyfriend on his birthday.

Funny that you're one of the few who had something so negative to say about the OP...in five full pages of responses. Obviously a lot of us saw the gesture behind the unspecificied dollar amount. He did lavish things for her as part of his love for her. And yet...he ALSO gives of himself.

Your opinions aren't everyones. In fact, in this case they're not even close to the majority. How much longer are you going to repeat your negativity? Get a hobby and leave them alone already. Good grief.

Case and point.  ^_^

I find that really well crafted statuettes or other pieces of artwork/sculptures work really well as gifts as well.

Ooooh, naughty calendar! That's a good one. I also liked what boyjen said about making whips and floggers for her Mistress. Toys and gear are so expensive and it's nice when we can have something especially made for us and it doesn't cost much at all. Other things that are pretty cool is when people have skills or knowledge that we don't...and can expose us to cool new experiences. My mate likes to bring me home treats every time he stops off at the grocery store. Usually rollos or oreos or something. But that's kind of a double-edged sword...because even though I have a huge sweet tooth, I also noticed after a while that my jeans weren't fitting like they used to :/ Maybe the next thing he surprises me with...should be a treadmill? lol

Oh oh, thought of more!

I've only a few big skills that I take any sort of pride in.  I don't consider myself exceptionally great at any of them, but that's because I'm creative/artistic.  I will -rarely- consider anything I produce by keystroke or by performance good enough.

That being said, I wrote a lot for my friends and my lovers.  I am -terrible- at poetry but wrote this terrific poem that I wish to God I could have had a second copy of because she lost it when she moved.  It was one of those "I'll be hard pressed to ever reproduce something of that quality ever again" kind of things.

I also used to record videos of myself with a camcorder or (lately) webcam and generally act silly or do whatever else I thought might be funny and send it to whoever I figured might be sad, or if they were feeling low, go on cam and make them laugh anyways.

My old roommate drew this picture of Princess Peach as a superhero, and I've been searching for someone to do a lineart of it and either the same person or someone to colour it.  Then I'm going to get it blown up and framed and give it to her... if I can ever figure out how to do all of that.

Imagination is key to good gifts. ^_^
