I'm curious ...

When did everyone of African ancestry become an "American"?

When selecting "Ethnicity" here, a person of African ancestry must select either "African American" or "Other".

So someone who has lived their whole life in England or Canada must choose "African American" or "Other".

Someone who has lived their whole life in Africa must choose "African American" or "Other".

I've lived long enough to hear all sorts of words used: Negro (United Negro College Fund), Coloured People (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People), so it is not for a lack of choices that we have "African American" ...

So why should everyone with African ancestry, regardless of nationality, self-identify as an "African American"?

This came up in another prior thread.

The timing to bring it  up again is not good- as some are very upset over the Compton Cookout.

I was unaware of this, and I confess I know nothing of a "Compton Cookout".

Thanks for letting me know.

Actually I did not see people "upset" over it...It isn't like that thread is 20 pages long or something...

As to the OP, there is more than one answer to your question, and I have only what I have heard other people who are more directly descended from Africa than I am.. because we are all out of Africa at some point or other according to the Eve Hypothesis

Indeed, something I keep in mind whenever the census comes around asking about my ethnic origins.

I was just curious why we had to add a nationality ("American") to define an ethnic origin.

I'm sure there must be African-Canadians, African-Swedes, African-Africans ...

~FR~

I mean, are we to believe there is something insulting about just being "African", that we have to add "American" to make it acceptable?

No.

Some are genuinely upset over the cook out.

I see them on youtube.

I don't want to inflame the matter. (any more then I already have)

Then please stop bringing that topic in here.

I'm not talking about a cookout, and I don't use youtube (56k modem is too slow).

I understand "African American" as an American of African descent. But this site offers its services around the world, listing all the countries of the world.

Not everyone of African descent is (or wishes to be) an American, nor would choose to self-identify in that way if some other option were available other than "Other".

So why insist they identify as "Americans"?

Thanks.

Rockspider (post 203) was extremely helpful.

We are one of the of the few places that does this... and it is not as if we are ashamed of our roots that we do it, it is actually a statement of pride in them...

I'm not sure I see how requiring a Canadian of African descent to select "African American" represents a "statement of pride" in his or her "roots".

Um... where did Canada enter the discussion... I missed this entirely!

I identify as a Scottish American... I did not realize I was ashamed of my Scot ancestry

Edited to add....

I see your point from an earlier post...I am tired, Daddy took me out for steak and lobster last night and I have a slight hangover from the wine...

I was unaware that Canadians that had ancestors that came from Africa had a terrible time labeling themselves...

I mean, there are three Black people in Canada... right?..(I am joking btw)

quote:

Black Canadians, Caribbean Canadians and African Canadians are designations used for people of Black African descent who reside in Canada. The terms are used by and of Canadian citizens who trace their ancestry back to people who were indigenous to Sub-Saharan Africa. The majority have relatively recent origins in the Caribbean, while some trace their lineage to the first slaves brought by British and French colonists to the mainland of North America. A minority of the population have recent African origin. Many Canadians identify as Black even though they may have multi-ethnic ancestries. Blacks and other Canadians often draw a distinction between those of Caribbean ancestry and those of African descent, which sometimes results in controversy around the terms used to label and identify the Black community. Unlike in the United States, where African American is the most widely accepted term, Blacks of Caribbean origin in Canada largely reject the term African Canadian as an elision of their Caribbean heritage. Black Canadians form the third largest visible minority group in Canada, after South Asian and Chinese people.[1]

So I guess they do not call themselves African Americans... although technically I suppose it would be okay, since they do live in North America... Like in South America they call both Canadians and US citizens Norte Americanos

it is mostly the white people who worry about the naming.
They are just people...the same as all the white European-Americans....just with a nicer tan.

Perhaps, but then you have those of African descent who have always lived in Africa, and those who have always lived in Europe, and many other places.
