A simple question out of curious. How much do you tip a waitress and why do you tip her that amount? Also what would make you tip her more?

I don't eat out much, but when I do I always give the waitress a tip I think she deserves. If she is quick to come up and retrieves my meal warm, I will tip her more. If she is slow and bring my food cold, she's ain't getting nothing. So if you serve me- I want my meals hot damn it :D I guess that applies to my subs too lol :P

I would give bigger tips of the waitress if she would wear a top hat or cat ears ^^ Those make girls look cute and it's it's not allowed to wear but she wears is anyway, I would tip here even more lol :P

(I didn't write the specific number of money, because the currency and economy is different in Lithuania, and it would look like I'm giving shit to them even if they try hard XD)

Around here, rule of thumb is to double the tax to make a decent tip. More for better service, less for poor service. I tend not to do less unless the service was atrocious, but that does happen on occasion. I have had wait staff botch orders, leave me waiting for 30+ minutes for my food and then have it arrive cold or wrong because they didnt realize it was ready, and completely ignore my empty glass while I was eatting rather than refilling it like they did every table around us. Those situations got significantly smaller tips, and occasionally a mention to the manager if it was really bad. I even had a waitress once stick her nose into our glasses and sniff our drinks to see which was root beer and which pepsi because she had forgotten!

Tip your servatron well! They make less wages and count on your tips for their living. Many places require the waitrons to tip out a certain percentage of their sales, betcha didnt know that. I have tipped out as much as 5% of my sales and a bit more. I dont agree with this practice but it is fairly common.

People who power trip over waitronage are evil and insecure. People who tip out 15% are just at the line of a decent tip. It isnt the early 90's anymore kids. People that tip out 20% or more are good folks.

If your service sucks bad and it is the waitrons fault sure show it in your tip. If it is not her fault then dont take it out on her/him.

Technically you only have to tip people if you intend to eat at the same place twice.

You could be perpetuating the problem. My initial comment was a joke but realistically if people keep tipping based on how hard done by waitressing staff are then they'll never get better treatment because some will chance the fact they are going to get all of their earnings in tips. If the staff knew that was unlikely they'd refuse to work that way and the employers would struggle to retain staff unless they paid them fairly.

I know that this is practice, it was here at a documentary last year or two years ago...however, tip or not tip depends after all on the service and nothing else. Do a good service and I am happy to tip...behave like a dumbass who couldn't care less then I certainly keep my tip with me...therefore good service I am generous, bad service won't get anything...thats my rule. same applies to cab drivers...nice folks, direct way, gets a tip...however, if he is a rude arse and thinks he needs to crawl over the speedrumps that I think he would be faster if I push his cab...then he won't get anything as with the black cabs we pay for the distance AND the time...hence when he wastes my time with him crawling over those ramps, then he already earns more then he would otherwise due to him needing more time...and therefore I don't see it necessary anymore to give him any penny on top of that.

Although I don't think service people automatically deserve something . My mother was a waitress for 20 years. I can't help but think back to how rough it was for her to provide for us so I give 20 and sometimes 30% depending on the person..I have walked out without giving anything 1 time but the lady was really bad..and to top it off she had a lousy attitude.

I try to remember how my mom might have felt if she didn't make enough money to support us and then realize how many possible single moms might be waiting on people in restaurants like the ones she worked in...and then tip.

I tip 20% at the nicer places, more at less expensive places.

-- Not to be-  -- negative- but foods often here locally have become  microwave crap, with prices that crept up to a point where it really is not fun to go out.

Minimum, 20%—but with one relevant caveat: if the server is being tremendously flippant or neglectful, I will leave a smiley face in pennies.

P.s If I plan on eating at that establishment again, I'll forgo the penny punishment and just overlook the ordeal, but the tip will certainly be lower than 20%.

P.p.s Overall, good treatment by the waitstaff enhances an experience at a restaurant, but I don't make a fetish of focusing so much on it that it ruins the experience. Good food, good wine, a good view and good conversation trumps a waitress having a bad day. Try to have fun. Part of the key to happiness in life is not in needing things to be perfect, but being able to live with imperfections. Well, to a certain point, that is.

I tend to tip 20% give or take. Sometimes I round up or down a little so it's usually 18% to 22%. My ex-wife was a waitress and served as honorary tip police while we were married. One thing she always told me is to tip in cash at the table but I rarely do that since I don't carry much cash on me or often only have larger bills.

My tipping practice has very little to do with the quality of the food and service. If either is poor I simply do not return. My own personal opinion is that anyone who leaves no tip at all should just stay home and cook and eat in.

I tip based on their service -- after all that is what a tip is in my opinion.

I usually tip 20% or say the bill was 35 and they did a really good job, i would tip them 10, i have tipped as low as 1% (i don't ever NOT leave a tip but tip according to service and a 1% tip i would hope would make them stop and reflect why whereas no tip would appear that i either forgot or simply don't tip), i have also tipped as almost double a bill for a job really well done and had the money to spare.

I used to get tipped really well when i served drinks at a club i worked at. I loved it and felt like i got paid to party and had a lot of fun with my clients (that's what i though of my regulars as lol). So i like to pay it forward when people do a good job.

grins, i also learned that the women usually are the ones who decide what the tip should be so if there was a couple, i was sure to engage the female a little more than the male, but still gave him enough attention. Then in the end lol you would always see him take out 20 and she would lean over and take out more! It pays to engage women when it comes to tipping.

None . Zilch. Nada. Nothing. we are living in a recession. i do work experience and get nothing for it. Why should they be tipped? They are doing their job. Their job is to serve meals and cook meals. I pay. I am not their employed. They get paid. What more do they want

First, regardless of gender, male or female, it depends on how good the service/ care was, and then how much I can afford to spare. If the service and care sucked, they don't get squatt from me. If the service and care and everything else was exempliary, and I could spare an extravigant tip then I have given as much as 20 dollars.

in better times i gave on occasion 10 to 15 dollars and never less than 5 dollars tip or euro equivalent, Now i pay and dont tip. Why ? i cant afford it. Restaurants need to get with the program. Dont expect your customers to supplement your staff 's income. Pay your staff properly and they dont need tips. im sorry but some companies are just extortionately greedy they are making multi millions and laying staff off. it is nauseating

In many many restaurants, the servers are required to "share" a certain percentage of their sales. So those of you who don't tip at all or tip less than ten percent are allowing this person who gets paid 2.00 per hour to pay for the honor of serving you. Servers also have to claim a percentage of their sales as tips. Whether they receive them from you or not.
