mikeyOfGeorgia -> Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 10:42:59 AM)

A strange thing happened to me today. i was getting Donna out of the van (she's in a wheelchair and the van has a mechanical lift) at Burger King. Some guy we did not know, who was driving out of the parking lot, stopped behind us and called out his passenger window "God bless you". i said, (under my breath) "God doesn't want to bless me and i don't need it either".

what should one say or do in such a situation?

I just ignore it when people say god bless you. Or  say thank you.

It's not really such an atrocity that I can't ignore it, and they really do mean well.

If you choose not to accept the well wishes, you could always yell out "I'm an atheist".

I'd say it reflects worse on you that then person who tried to show you they had empathy, but that's just one person's opinion.

hlen5 -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 10:45:56 AM)

Can you take it as a generic  (unsolicited) well wish?

ourmsbetty -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 10:47:02 AM)

Smile and say thank you.

What he's actually saying is that "I see the situation you are in, am moved by it and admire you meeting the challenge. I wish for life to go well for you because you deserve it."

It took me a bit of time figure it out but I finally realized that when someone does these things they are not trying to force their belief on you but trying to share good thoughts the only way they now how.

They can only know what they know. Take it in the spirit in which it was intended.

--  why is that a problem?

In a world that has gone mad- it is nice to see some good.

Just accept the compliment in good spirits.

Maybe smile to your self and think what a nice man?

Mike,  how do you know you are not blessed?

Maybe you are in some way- but don't realize it.

how about saying "i'm a realist". atheist is such a negative term and not accurate

ok.

So the glass is half full.  Not half empty.   :-)

IF the person knew you were a "realist" then i can see how you may be upset at the expression.

A stranger wishes you something that is heart felt and meaningful to him/her, and this upsets you?

Would you rather he/she called out to you.... "fucking idiot!"

In a world that is full of rudeness and meanness, you want to complain about this?

While that's a wonderful twist, unfortunately, it's not an accurate one.  You would have to prove that there is no God to claim it.  Something that you don't have the ability to do.

As for negativity, are you quite sure that you, specifically as a person, want to engage in that debate?

Yup.

You can shout whatever you want. You are the one being a dick who can't accept a wish for you well-being because you got your panties in a twist. All that you are going to do is encourage people to not care about each other and hurt your own cause by portraying those who don't believe in G-d as assholes. So fewer people will want to associate with them or find out why they think what they think.

But if that's how you want people to think of you and those who think like you, go for it. I'm sure it won't be long before people realize that giving you good wishes isn't worth it.

mikeyOfGeorgia -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 11:02:19 AM)

just about the "God" part. i KNEW what he meant which is why i held my tongue.

just as nobody here has no proof that one exists.

There are actually people who would have laughed, gestured or said something rude.

So yeah- I would just be happy.

tazzygirl -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 11:03:41 AM)

incredible. he wishes you well, and you want to get all pissy about the way a stranger wishes that?

get a reality grip.

playfulotter -> RE: Why i hate Sundays (7/11/2010 11:04:13 AM)

I find it hard to believe people only say this to others on Sundays....hmmmm...I am not religious but I wouldn't take it as a bad thing at all.
