A Return to Chivalry? http://www.ashbrook.org/publicat/onprin/v9n4/moore.html

Sigh, the point that I've tried to make is that "chivalry" is an absurd term that has, in the eyes of some (including the author of this article), a ridiculously romanticised meaning. The dead giveaway is the fact that the author of this article quotes "Percval's mother", a fictional character who never actually existed!

I'm not disputing for a second that good manners and behaviour should be encouraged, or the idea that real men are strong enough to have good manners - but the shockingly innacurate and romanticised vision of "chivalry" (or even "manners in the 1950's") is absurd, and ought to be offensive to anyone who knows how utterly dreadfully ye knights of olde behaved way back when.

I asked both Carol and my online slave whether they would say I was "chivalrous" and both thought a moment and said yes. So at least in 2 women's opinions, at least one male qualifies.

I bet you bullied them into saying that, you cad!

Greetings:

I respectfully disagree. I have heard your point throughout this thread quite clearly. We simply have differing viewpoints on the subject of Chivalry. Nonetheless thank you for your contribution.

Take care!

A Knight in Shining Armor is rare these days. I think perhaps you might re-consider your reference. Perhaps you meant, jester? A thought to consider, chivalrous or not, aye!

Take care!

I was taught chivalry when I was 13 . It had to be taught to me because back then as now no one knew what it was . I have had it thrown in my face when I open a door for a woman and she just snarls at me . I have toned it down a bunch now I am older . Chivalry is dieing out and now one seems to notice .

Some say that the age of chivalry is past, that the spirit of romance is dead. The age of chivalry is never past, so long as there is a wrong left unredressed on earth.

I've had worse Silentrunner26.  I've had girls almost slap me for holding a door open.  And it wasn't always just for them, they may have been in a group of 5 or 6 people that I held the door for.

I believe a "Knight in Shining Armor" was rare back in those days too.
Why would you think that in the middle ages the majority of men were chivalrous?
The stories we read are written about men and women of great importance across Europe.

There have always been people needing to romanticize everything in life, those who are romantic in their relationships, those who open doors and those who do not, those who like to live by rules and those who find their grasp stifling.

Presently, you can't just go kidnap yourself a bride, negotiate with her parents and marry her.
There is a different set of social rules people follow now. Some may be described as chivalrous, some may not. Encountering drivers who yield always brings a smile to my face.

If you wish to live in a way reminiscent of the past, then by all means, please go ahead.

Personally, I don't feel the need to equate any considerate behaviour to "chivalry".

Lastly, we can send chivalrous love notes but they won't be written out of consideration.

Consider the quote.

Now consider thoughts toward the demise of Chivalry time warped into the Millennium where Chivalry in principle will live eternally, aye! Truth be truth of Chivalry regardless of words spoken as mere naysay.

I wish you most well!

Chivalry goes hand in hand with Chauvenism. The writings of the Comtessa de Chauvin in the middle ages sparked the centuries facination with "courtly love" as an outlet for affecting in an age of arranged marriages for fiscal benefit of the extended family.

As deriled as the term "Chauvenism" and "Chauvenist" became with the women's liberation movement, the terms originated in a philosophy to liberate women from being considered chattel property to be bartered, traded, and beaten at will. Chivalry was an "ideal" set of behaviors to be strived for. As reality never lives up to the fantasy, it was never fully realised. On the other hand, if you lose sight of the ideal, what motivation is there to strive to improve.

Now in the BDSM community, you can find many who prefer the latter. But you can also find hints of Chauvenistic memes in things like the "Code du Odalisque".

If you consider your woman to be chattel to be used at will and discarded when no longer desired, you are not being chivalric.

If you consider your woman a rare gem to be protected and nurtured, in whatever way, you have a chivalric mindset.

Just thinking on the bottom line of such things.

Stefan
