Do people really do that? How odd. I've got several friends who are practising* Christians, two devoutly so. Their beliefs are none of my business. They know my views, I know theirs, and that’s all there is to it, and all that need be said among friends. One even used to pray for me (during a difficult time in my life, many years ago), and told me so. It didn't bother me. In fact I found it quite sweet – a gesture of caring that I appreciated, even if I didn't happen to believe the reasoning underpinning it.

I certainly wouldn’t want to surround myself with people who only believed what I did. In addition, and maybe this is just me, I consider it the height of bad manners to “mock” someone for their genuinely held beliefs. Surely, if one believes in free speech, then one also believes in freedom to express beliefs; so long as those beliefs don't impinge on me or my freedom and/or security then I don't see what the problem is.

As I say, I'm not a “believer”, but I do get annoyed with intolerance, be religious intolerance, or intolerance towards those of a religious leaning. As far as I'm concerned people can do what they like, say what they like, and indulge in whatever practices they like, so long as I'm not being oppressed by them doing so.

* when I was younger I used to think that meant they had to get a badge or pass a test in order to “get good at it”

Perhaps they're just put off by the person who forces discussions about religion upon everyone they "befriend?"

So let me get this straight, you're one of those religious sorts who feels compelled to "witness" to everyone you are friendly with. And you find it unpleasant when an atheist responds in similiar kind? Hypocrit much?

If you don't want your beliefs ridiculed and attacked don't shove them in unwilling people's faces.

I will befriend an atheist if they still hold similar values as I do but if they don't then we're always going to end up bashing heads and we're not going to like the same things in life. I mean I couldn't ever imagine being friends with someone who was a skinhead or someone who is a fundamentalist. We just have zero in common. Our value systems would not be anywhere at all similar. Ok so apparently people don't talk about religion with those they like to call a friend. I get that. Religion is my life and so yeah..I'm gonna talk about religion to those I call my friends and those who I would like to get to know more to possibly become my friend. If they don't like that I do so then ok, we're not gonna be friends. No big deal really..but to a lot of you it is a big deal who call yourselves atheists. So be it. I'm more than willing to shrug my shoulders and drop it like I always do with those who are atheists.

If you were willing to drop it you wouldnt have mentioned it.
Im crazy about a devout roman catholic republican, I have been for 12 years, I respect him more than most people in the world.
I certainly cant say that about most other Agnostics Atheists or Christians or Jews, Buddhists or Hindus or anyone, just based on their religion.That to me is hugely what is wrong with this world, one cant celebrate the differences they have to marginalise them.
How fucking sad
and thats a personal observation not a religious one

Why are people afraid to expand their universe? If all of my friends were the same as me it would be boring. I enjoy learning new things and having friends from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

I'm sorry that you've met so many unpleasant people, littlewonder. While I tend to think of myself more as a "non-theist" than an a-theist (the difference, to me, being between those who just don't believe in deity(ies) and those who actively -deny- the existence of deity(ies)), I've found that the "angry, bitter, jaded, argumentative" thing seems to be pandemic throughout our culture, regardless of religious background.

For myself, I believe that people should follow whatever brings them peace. For me, that doesn't include a deity. For someone else, maybe they really do feel more whole with deity in their lives. As long as they're not trying to force their beliefs on me, I think everyone should have the opportunity to seek wholeness where they will.

I do think, though, that just because one knows a dozen nasty people of a certain ilk, it does not logically follow that even a -majority- of the people of that category are nasty. I am fortunate to know a number of pleasant, intelligent, and fun people who happen to be either atheists or non-theists, just like I know a number of pleasant, intelligent, and fun people who have -some-belief in deity. I think that questions that ask us to lump all of one particular brand of person into a single pool of good/bad/indifferent causes us to lose sight of the fact that each person is an individual, and that each person has the right to stand and fall on hir own merits.

I've had many experiences, but rather than go into that detail let's just look at what happens on this board every time there is a religious discussion.

There are very few on here who identify themselves as agnostic or atheist who have not expressed an openness to the possibility of a God.

Contrast that with the believers such as yourself who will not even entertain the possibility of the opposite.

Ya know rule as a person who does believe in a greater source I find your statement above completely opposite of the facts. I find many more people of faith expressing a doubt than the self proclaimed atheists proclaiming a possibility of the existence of God.

SOOOO maybe we are both looking at the same facts through a different lens and reaching a different conclusion. All I know is I have expressed doubt but I do not remember you expressing a possibility of God.

I guess it is my lens...

You are welcome to check the archives, I have expressed that possibility many times.

I have also expressed a desire to believe, but I find that impossible with the complete absence of evidence.
