You know RapierFugue, your posts are such a ray of sunshine. On a site that doesn't allow people to disrespect other people for their kink... you sure have some fucking balls coming in and insulting people for their belief systems.

I think this whole spat is happening because of an English/American divide. Things that are totally acceptable to say in England about religion are regarded as utter heresy in America - here there's a long tradition of criticising and questioning religion that's just a part of everyday life, and that you don't seem to have trans-pond.

Sometimes it's kind of jarring to be reminded of that.

Ah ... my stalker arrives. I was wondering where you'd got to :) I do worry when you're even silghtly late, you know.

Riiiiiiight ... so I'm supposed to respect people just because they dress up tripe as a "belief system"?

Excuse me if I call bullshit on that one.

I have just decided to start my own religion; it involves worshipping Mr Blobby as a god, and anyone who dares decry me is guilty of disrespecting my belief system. So there.

And, with *my* religion, you don't even need to have issues with your parents' religion in order to join, so it's all good :)

I really enjoy it when people I do not know  well and who I am unsure of go out on a limb and start sawing their asses off metaphorically (with no prompting from me).

Just saying, I like that. Does that make me a sadist?

..and just when I thought that 99% of all horseshit on these forums, fluffy or otherwise, was more or less safely contained in P&R.
The more things change, the more the common-denominator misconceptions stay the same. What a pity.
Don't bother trying to argue this one; you know, casting pearls before inciteful, closed-minded swine who can't (or won't) think outside of their own boxes, and all that..

Signed, one of them thar Wiccan-types. )O(

From that time frame of the meow, meow song, you know I have a sense of humor and can take it with all the jokes about me fucking rabid wolverines. RF seems to know what he is doing and enjoys insulting people. Joke, societal acceptance or simply trying to be offensive to people? I'm going with the later... but then... being his stalker of a few posts in a year... what could one expect?

Well indeed so ... I didn't expect anything remotely resembling an intelligent reply.

And so far I haven't been disappointed.

Anyway, I've given my opinion, so I'll leave folk to their “serious religion”.

Enjoy. I found the responses amusing, and that's the main thing ;)

See? Passive aggressive posting style, meant to stir shit up and amuse himself. That does translate across that big pond. We have those types here too.

heh. The amusing point being, if I was wrong, you wouldn’t seek to reference it. But hey ho, it's not like you can do any harm, and for as long as your flinging bile at me you're not bullying anyone else, so it's all good.

Night night :)

Neither did I, sir. I am, however, disappointed in you - not that that matters one iota to you, to be sure. Some of us who once enjoyed your friendly presence on another thread had thought much better of you than this. As such, we see you have changed for a drastic measure of less than you were, and you are not missed.

I have called it like I see it, as have you. Sorry that you can't deal with it, nor yet prove anyone wrong.

Have a nice day.

The difference is huge . . .

" . . . The survey found that 85 percent of Americans believe in God and life after death, 80 percent pray regularly, and 75 percent attend religious services or visit a place of worship, with half going at least once a week.

In contrast, 48 percent of Britons, 46 percent of Frenchmen and 28 percent of Germans and Austrians are non-religious. Among European nations, only strongly Catholic Poland and Italy are as religious as the United States. Globally, American religiosity ranks between that of Europe’s industrialized countries and that of developing countries such as Brazil, Guatemala and Nigeria."

I've met the guy, Lockit. He's a top gent and a real sweetie. But he's a sweetie with that sort of ultra-dark sense of humour I've never really heard Americans use. A few times I've seen you take exception to something he's said that's made me laugh - I'm not saying you overreact, but I genuinely think there's a trans-atlantic divide, and it's one of the reasons I don't make a lot of the jokes on here that I would if this forum were mainly English.

I adapt my sense of humour to the environment. He's choosing not to, and that's rubbing you up the wrong way. I'm not saying either of you are wrong - he's not malicious and you're not stupid - but that's what's happening.

Given that a significant minority in the UK listed 'jedi' as their religion in the last census (and will probably do so in the one that's just happening now) he's got a point.

If it were all numbers, I guarantee that Islam would call your religion 'fluffy horseshit'.

That would be tricky for them, or anyone else, to do.

rapier, normally, you come across on these boards as intelligent and well informed. This time, unfortunately, you are coming across as arrogant and crashingly ignorant.

You claim you didn't start the 'numbers game' when, in fact, that is precisely what you did.

People have their beliefs. All of them have some good and some bad.

As for it being difficult for someone to call your belief system fluffy horseshit, never ignore the potential of large numbers of ignorant people. You seem to want to lead them.

I don't think religion or lack there of has anything to do how one feels in their sexual role. But I think those not under a condemnation for who they really are, are far more likely to indulge openly in their passion. I think the true number between say a christian or a wiccan would be similar but many christians will suffer silently in their bathrooms masturbating for years before freely admitting their feelings. and yes, I'm a christian, but a very black sheep in the pasture

RF,

I think what bothers me from an observational standpoint is this:
Over in another section there are people who expressed their genuine concern for you when you were struggling with a prolonged illness recently.

And now you have just expressed utter disdain for some of them in a very personal way.

I am sure in the world at large you have friends and acquaintances that you do not agree with on every subject and have instances in which you simply agree to disagree.

I don't actually see anything in your profile that would give indicators that anything regarding personal spirituality is a hard limit of yours.

And while other people seem to think it may have simply been somehow misconstrued good fun, I am not seeing any sign of this.

In the end, it comes down to treating people with respect and despite whatever personal histories there may be, I am seeing a patent lack of respect in reference to people's personal beliefs and unnecessary attacks on goodhearted people.

I am sure somehow or other my post will lend itself to your amusement.
If so, I am glad to have obliged.

edit: clarity

Find out what percentage of the female populace are gullible enough to fall for fluffy horseshit in general.

Way to be disrespectful to other people's religion.

From my point of view as a scientist, it's *all* fluff if it hasn't been published in a peer reviewed journal.  That includes Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Judaism and Wicca.  It is not reasonable to single out any particular religious beliefs as being weirder, stupider or fluffier than any other, because they are ALL silly to people who don't adhere to them.

This said, various forms of personal spirituality and belief can be a positive force in someone's life if it is meaningful to them.  And it is not your business to say what is or isn't reasonable for another person to believe in, not when we're talking about religion.  Courteous people simply respect the beliefs of others and agree to disagree.  Assholes say shit like what you just did.

Ordinarily, it would be nigh impossible to determine the percentage.  However, because I am omniscient, I can say with great authority that the answer is 0.07%.

You're welcome.

(everyone else seems to be busy arguing about religion, so I figured I'd provide an answer to the OP)
