Mainstream?

Might it not generaly be considered that we, the members of this site, and the associated communities, with our own interests and various proclivities be ever so slightly "outside" the mainstream?

Why on earth should we have to feel that we have to adhere to rigid rules in language when our very desires and behaviours step so readily beyond that set by general society?

The language we use reflects the people we are.

We are "diferent". Why should our language not be so?

I would have thought that our chat can have as wide a range as our tastes.

Rules rules rules.

FR

I'm OK with "A promiscuous woman" or "A woman of loose morals". I don't think there's a need to define it further. Using those definitions I am quite comfortable with being called a slut.

However, the whole debate is moot, "slut" isn't really a word, it's an acronym.

The dictionary defines it as such:

1.
a. A person, especially a woman, considered sexually promiscuous.
b. A woman prostitute.
2. A slovenly woman; a slattern.

So apparently there is no word for a guy who's sexually promiscuous, so that would make it alright, or should we call those guys studs?

The best definition for the word I have seen is this:

A Slut is a Woman with the Morals of a Man

More Misandry just because you don't like a words meaning.

The meanings of words change.

Nice
This comes from the Latin ‘not to know’. Originally a ‘nice person’ was someone who was ignorant or unaware.

Brave
This once was used to signify cowardice. Indeed, its old meaning lives on in the word ‘bravado’.

Manufacture
From the Latin meaning ‘to make by hand’ this originally signified things that were created by craftsmen. Now the opposite, made by machines, is its meaning.

Counterfeit
This once meant a perfect copy. Now it means anything but.

Words don't mean what we want them to mean, we don't get to change them into 'badges of honor.' They have specific meanings defined by the dictionary. If you want a badge of honor, invent your own word. Do I support the idea of women as gatekeepers who must be chaste to be acceptable? No. Do I think there's any real value in society to self-control when it interferes with the pursuit of happiness? No. That doesn't mean I get to misuse the language to further my own ends, however. If you want a way of saying it which doesn't strongly imply negative judgment, consider 'bohemian' or perhaps 'hedonist.'

Definition of SLUT
1 chiefly British : a slovenly woman
2 a : a promiscuous woman
b : a saucy girl

And, again, the meanings of words do change.

They do, regrettably, but not because we sit down and decide for them to. They change as a result of continuous and widespread misuse, which is hardly laudable. To think that that is something which is to be striven for is the definition of misguided. As I say, if you want a word to express something you don't feel is expressed by a word in the language as it stands, invent a new one. Don't misuse an existing one until you make it mean what you want it to mean.

The meanings of words change all the time, over time.

I appreciate your insistence on the "dictionary definition", it's a very reasonable place to start, but you do know that dictionaries revise their definitions over time?

Dictionaries don't just set out the meaning of a word, they set out its usage.

In modern English, Slut has much more to do with promiscuity/morals than "being slovenly". Now the question is... are people entitled to challenge the idea that promiscuity is intrinsically immoral.

Hell yes they are.

[Ed to mod the screw-up I noticed]

Im sorry the constant evolution of words is disturning to you. Guess we better stop "posting" and find another word to express what we do here.

They do, absolutely. As I said, I am in no way a proponent of moral controls on sexuality insofar as it occurs between 2 consenting adults. They do not, on the other hand, get to ruin the language for that purpose.

how far back would you like to wind the clock then?

The reason I ask is that a very good proportion of the words you use on a daily basis have a meaning that has evolved well beyond their archaic sense.

Personally, I'll be fine with pretty much any date, I studied classics.

I would love to see you stop them.

For myself, I'm on a campaign to change the meaning of the word slut from derogatory to one that is more fitting...

A person who enjoys sex... ALOT

who decides what "misuse" of a word is? =p it's not like the definitions of words are handed down from the infinite wisdom of our benevolent alien overlords.

The inventors of the words who originally endowed them with their meanings, as interpreted from the first texts to employ them?

The meanings of words changing isnt bad either. Its a reflection of our society and the changes we, as the society, are bringing about.
