It's on another forum I belong to. She's got some odd views. She thinks hurricanes hitting Florida and New Orleans are punishment for allowing gays.

You might want to point out that gays are allowed to be married in most European countries, and so far no hurricanes or major earth quakes. Additionally if god is so almighty, why would he need hurricanes that hit FL and New Orleans? Would he just send hurricanes that kill gays and the people who allow them?

mnottertail -> RE: I need something to bang my head on.... (8/13/2012 1:13:55 PM)

Well, god wouldn't do a bit of good sending hurricanes after you cloth-eared bints, you didn't let the bloody bubonic plague turn you aside from you bleedin sins, innit?

Meh, internet doesn't count, its like a convention center for crazies,(look at us)but I am surprised she trusted the evil computer enough to use a keyboard without fear of it stealing her soul

What makes it funny is that it's a forum that deals with chemistry and formulation.

Won't work. There is a fundamental human failure when it comes to certain abstract concepts.
Some people just ascribe to certain beliefs in such an absolute fashion that they are incapable of believing otherwise.

There are some phenomenally well educated and intelligent people that absolutely believe in Creationism. In their mind there is no conflict of information, and no amount of dialog or proof short of literally divine intervention would convince them otherwise.

I actually don't see the conflict between creationism and evolution, at least when it comes to Christianity. I don't see why the world couldn't have evolved after it was made. However, I am not a Christian, so I wouldn't say I was really qualified to say too much about that. I know a few notable stories, and that's it.

The bible contradicts evolution, humans didn't walk
with dinosaurs as far as we can tell by the fossil record
they are hundreds of millions of years seperated.
So the earth seems to be more than 10,000years old.

There are countless number of discrepancies.
You don't see the conflict?

-ARIES

I definitely see a conflict regarding the claims that the world is only 6000 or 7000 year old.

However, I do not see a conflict between believing in creationism and evolution, which is what I stated. You appear to be assuming that everyone who believes in creationism also believes that the world is only 6,000 or 7,000 years old. Not everyone who believes in creationism believes in these numbers.

The bible doesn't give a number. It's pretty silent on how long the Earth or cosmos have been around. Which is why I made my statement in response to SpaceSpunk in order to understand why some Christians would see a conflict.

Edit: From my experience, not all Christians take the bible literally.

beat ya to it

SpaceSpank -> RE: I need something to bang my head on.... (8/13/2012 1:40:04 PM)

Therein lies the issue.

We are not directly referencing creationism. We're talking about creationists.

Which are a subset of Christians that do, by definition, believe the world to be very much younger that just about any scientific or empirical evidence would suggest.

To me, Genesis creationism and evolution are mutually exclusive but perhaps I am not familiar with your flavor of creationism. Do elaborate.

And what do you think about the fossil record
telling us that creatures evolve over time from
simpler origins, and man and dinosaur didn't
exist at the same time?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I need something to bang my head on.... (8/13/2012 1:49:23 PM)

While the bible doesn't give a number as such, the people that generated that 6000 year number used their version of the Bible to generate the number.

The whole trope of Bible as lucky number book intrigues me. Is it really like those dream books that give you lottery numbers and tell you what the vision of flying past your cousin Loreta's garden means? If we release some trained canaries onto a set of bible verses, what would we discover?

I like fossils.

Just the parts they use to make their point. Otherwise,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_literalism

Steve Falkenberg, professor of religious psychology at Eastern Kentucky University, says, I've never met anyone who actually believes the Bible is literally true. I know a bunch of people who say they believe the Bible is literally true but nobody is actually a literalist. Taken literally, the Bible says the earth is flat and sitting on pillars and cannot move (Ps 93:1, Ps 96:10, 1 Sam 2:8, Job 9:6). It says that great sea monsters are set to guard the edge of the sea (Job 41, Ps 104:26)... [17]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Earth_creationism#Interpretation_of_Genesis

...The genealogies of Genesis record the line of descent from Adam through Noah to Abraham. Young Earth creationists interpret these genealogies literally, including the old ages of the men. For example, Methuselah lived 969 years according to the genealogy. Differences of opinion exist regarding whether the genealogies should be taken as complete or abbreviated, hence the 6,000 to 10,000 year range usually quoted for the Earth's age.

...Genesis says that, after the flood, the average human lifespan dropped from around of 900 years at the time of Noah to around 175 by the time of Abraham.[dubious – discuss] Some young Earth creationists have suggested that this is due to the effects of inbreeding as only eight people survived the flood.[57] Another suggestion is that the Earth had a higher concentration of oxygen prior to the flood, possibly due to the vapor canopy, creating a giant hyperbaric chamber that extended lifespans.[citation needed]

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I need something to bang my head on.... (8/13/2012 2:02:43 PM)

Earth's atmosphere DID have higher concentrations of oxygen in the past... which is why there were really bigass bugs flying around. Be very afraid!!
