Your post has prompted me to contact the bone marrow registry and make sure my donor details are up to date. I'm really hoping to get that call some day.

My thoughts and prayers are with you dc.

Athena, I hope to get called someday, too.

Friends ---

Tomorrow brings an important and scary doctor's appointment. I'd be grateful for any prayers, good wishes, healing energy, karma, or what-have-you you can send my way.

Many thanks!

Do they extract donations they same we they get biopsy samples? If so, my hat's off to you good ladies!

Warmest thanks to you all.

I am truly moved each time I revisit this thread. I also dearly appreciate the cmails I've gotten and apologize for being slow to answer them.

Here's the latest update, from the email bulletins I've been inflicting on family and friends:

Today brought my first—and, please God, last—bone-marrow biopsy. The object of the game was to extract fluid and bone bits that can be examined for signs of lymphoma. The nurse practitioner at Lombardi was awesome: friendly, informative, incredibly caring, and adept. She did everything she could to make me comfortable, both physically and emotionally.

Problem is, no amount of caring or anesthetic can numb bone. So there were some moments of major fist-clenching. They were brief but definitely packed a wallop. And my bones are apparently a bit “soft,” so it took two tries to get the bone nuggets. (I asked whether the bone softness needed attention and was relieved to hear that it didn’t. Medical mavens, please let me know if you disagree.) The payoff for all this excitement was a syringe full of fluid that looked like blood and a few bone fragments that looked like strawberry Pop Rocks.

These potential relics from St. Pierre of Dupont will head off to Georgetown’s pathology lab. I should get results on Tuesday or Wednesday. The nurse noted that it’s not unusual for a lymphoma to worm its way into the marrow and reassured me that positive (for the lymphoma, not me) results need not be distressing. She also spoken enthusiastically about my oncologist, which was great to hear.

Unhappily, yes. Only briefly, which helped.

Having found this thread rather late, but still wishing you a full and speedy recovery as well...and that you won't have to encounter any more surprises like your second tumour...

dc, bone marrow gets matched by way of blood samples, just a little draw. Not nearly the same as what happens for you when you get tested.

Keeping a good, warm thought for you and reminding you--I live less than an hour from DC, we probably have mutual acquaintances, and I'm available for rides, sitting and waiting, and hand holding if you need it. Also, I often work around there, and wouldn't mind dropping in to help tidy up or help with a laundry load or two. Just let me know.

Me too--and then he can show everyone his sparkly clean house, and give them my number, lol.

Seriously, dc, when someone in the community is in a rough patch, this is how I pay back kindnesses that I've received. So it's on the house--meaning free of charge--you have enough issues right now. We probably know plenty of people in common (it's a small world) so I've got references. Just say the word.

Talk about mixed feelings: Learned tonight that one of my adorable nieces has added me to her nightly prayers. Lovely, no? But I'm feeling a little guilty, since I bumped a family friend (a young widow with kids). Apparently, my niece has a finite number of slots.

Today brought the first truly good news since my oncology odyssey began.

My bone-marrow biopsy was negative. The lymphoma in my midriff (a secondary and apparently independent cancer from my rectal mass) has not spread. Hallelujah!
