Oncology waiting rooms, I learned today, are home to some amazing stories. I met a man whose wife had 30 tumors--and no, that number is no typo--plucked from her lungs five years ago. The docs back then gave her a one-in-five chance of seeing out another year. Now, alas, the cancer is back: a fist-size tumor in her lung and (their real heartbreak) a tumor in the brain. Found myself remembering a favorite bit of old wisdom: "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."
