So reading the coverage of the shooting in the theater in Tampa, I'm glad it's a retired cop that did it. Cops are definitely on my bad side today, after the tragedy of the Thomas verdict, and so there is a two-birds/one rock element. The message gets sent, and a cop will (with a bit of luck) die in prison.

Heinlein wrote that an armed society is a polite society, but apparently the guy yucking it up with his wife and texting after the lights went down in the theater hadn't heard of that concept.

Maybe I'm just in a really foul mood tonight, but my reaction at the moment is that is serves both of them right.

Let`s see......Florida.....

No surprise there.....

I recall that talking in theaters and screaming kids at the beach are your biggest pet peeves...

But the "asshole" was texting BEFORE the movie.....

One of my pet peeves are people arguing during my movie.....

Reminds me quite a bit of this movie, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEFj0Pngu_E where they do exactly this. If you have time, please watch this clip from the movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52EnTtGstKg , its an incredible rant that the main character goes on about decency and civilization that I felt was genius. The rest of the movie I could hardly care about but the rant was what really made this film stick for me.

What I took from this story is that if no one had been carrying a gun, one more person would be alive today, and another would not have been facing spending the rest of his days in prison. If there were no guns in the equation, the worst that could have happened would have been fisticuffs until others intervened and separated the two protagonists.

We never cease hearing claims from the pro-gun lobby that guns prevent crimes. This seems to disprove that claim. This seems a clear case of gun possession turning what at worst would have been a minor assault into murder/manslaughter.

Retired cop. 71 years old.
Both people injured.

So I think there is more here than meets the eye.

There used to be notices all over UK "This is a nuclear free town/city" during the 'cold war'. I often wondered if the soviets ever read them ? "Oh we can't drop a nuke here, it's a nuclear free town.................let's go find one that isn't"

That could happen, Butch. It seems like some of the initial facts are always in error in these cases, but there were 22 other people in the theater, and their stories seem to be lining up pretty well here, so far. Now it could come out that the dead texting asshole made the wrong move, and the retired cop was justified in shooting him. Florida is a stand-your-ground state, after all, and the cop paid for the seat he was sitting in.

I enjoy movies on the big screen, with the big sound, but all too often some random shithead is in the theater, and the staff doesn't give a shit.
