The claim of secession in defence of threatened "states"rights,coming on the heels of the election of Lincoln was spurious at best outright propaganda at worst.....the issue was slavery and the economic as well as social impact of any emanipation plan.The republican platform of containing slavery was seen as a problem for slaveholders who were faced with a growing problem ,the need to diffuse thier growing slave population.Containment of this indentured class would have led to an overabundance and resulting loss of value of property,simply by the laws of supply and demand.The social implications were also alarming to a ruling class looking at the demographics of an exploding poppulation of slaves.Lincoln's stated pledge to niether molest where it existed nor allow it to spread was a deathknell to the economic fortunes of slaveholders.The call to defend states rights came from this class as a clarion call to entice and arouse the southern majority.who by the way were,other than the slave himself the biggest victim of the south's pecuilor institution.Non sloave holders in the south were hugely disdvantaged whether self employed or wage workers(at the time referred to as wage-slaves).It was this class,poor illiterate country boys who died in record numbers fighting for the Confedate Battle Flag

so smith, im thinking seeing a bunch of harleys go by, many of em flying the stars and bars, that just wouldnt warm the cockles of your heart like it does mine huh?

and i know theres no way to make it NOT disappear anywhere that it pisses enough folks off who are vocal and have money......but it is a symbol......it is not a plantation owner with a whip beating anyone down.....some may see that when they look at it, but some see something different.

so when will they ban the rainbow flag? all malcolm x symbols?

they had malcolm x shirts here for a good while-and they said "you wear your x, ill wear mine". they may have meant to offend with that, but i think thats a damn good idea......you wear your symbol, ill wear mine.....as long as i dont steal you women and put you in a field working 15 hours a day, wtf does it matter? i really really dont get the hatred for it.

I see the flag as a symbol of rebellion.

One thing many of you are missing, the vast majority of southerners fought for a whole different reason. Their homes. Johnny Reb picked up his squirrel gun and marched to war because northern armies were invading what was by law a soveriegn nation. The actual constitutional right to secede was invoked and 13 states decided to form a new nation. Northern troops were going to march and the boys were going to defend their homes. The battle call in the south was to protect their homes and their way of life.
As for slavery, the south was well on its way to abolishing slavery. The plantation owners were discovering that the practice was DAMNED EXPENSIVE. They had to pay for slaves, feed them, provide them shelter and clothing, and still paid for overseers and guards to watch them. It was costly and they knew it. Machines would, and did, come out to replace slave labor and the practice would have ended. Whether they would have freed their slaves, sold them to other countries or killed them all is anyone's guess.
It was actually a case of "Don't tell us what to do," being taken too far by both sides.

This is the second time the rainbow flag has surfaced in this thread, and this gay guy has to object.

The rainbow flag was not flown by slaveowners, nor by people turning firehoses and attack dogs on unarmed civil rights marchers. The rainbow flag was not the battle emblem of people who waged literal war against the United States. Comparing it to the Confederate flag is completely boneheaded.
