Here's what we have to look forward to... in fifty years Leather folks will look back on today as the "good old days" and will have ascribed to us "the old ways" as if there was some sort of universal BDSM of the era.  And of course, it will have been better, more respectful and honorable, and stricter than anything in practice at the time.

From what I've heard of "Old Guard" it came out of a memoir called the "Leatherman's Handbook" by Larry Townsend. A gay leather man was reminising about how good the "old times" were after all of his friends had passed during the height of the AIDS epidemic. The book did emphsize very scrict protocols and expectaions of behaviors on both sides of the whip.

Cheers,
Kevin

You clearly haven't READ the Leatherman's Handbook.  Considering they did golden showers in the back corner of bars and "cruised" for sex partners, it wasn't the holy roman empire some nitwits want to make it out to be.  It was horny perverted gay men, the same guys who brought you glory holes and bath houses for gods sakes.  I don't say that to make fun of them but simply to cast a less "rosey" light on a time that has been overly romanticised by people who want to puff up their all too empty chests about "the old ways"

*yanks her mind up outta the gutter her mind went into at the things she read.. such as "cruising for sex partners.. golden showers... and glory holes"*

Hello RocketDoc. From what you say, it is mentioned ''looking for a Master who understands the "Old Ways" '' not who is actually still ''doing'' the old ways.

My take on it is that the person enjoys protocol, good manners and a more formal approach to the lifestyle. All these things can still be done in 2008 without wearing sweaty leather and going iconic. RL.

Id say that RL stated it best, she may be reffering to old guard or leather like the others have suggested and as you can see there is some animosity towards it however when used in  a profile its not meaning any of that just the protocol stuff

Where on earth in this entire thread do you see any animosity?  I have no animosity towards that 40+ year ago time period.  I dislike people who want to say "I live in a fantasy world and so I am better than you" but that is the only animosity I have.

i see animosity every time i read about old gaurd, because often times those being vocal about it do so with a patronising tone to those who dont, if you dont see it oh well.

I don't feel I clearly get what you are saying.  Are you saying those who identify as "old guard" are showing animosity towards those who do not or are you saying that those who identify as "old guard" are victims of animosity?

The people I have met who practice strict protocol and formalities in their lifestyles refer to what they do as "Leather." I can't think of anyone of these legit Leatherfolk who would reference their lifestyles as being "Old Guard" or the "Old Ways".

Why? Because they have enough respect for their Leather lifestyle to know the history and thus won't misrepresent themselves in such a way.

So there is a big difference between seeing a profile that says "Leather" and seeing one that says "Old Guard/Old Ways". The difference being the probability that one is grounded in reality, knowledge, and history and the other being one grounded in fantasy, ignorance, and a desire to give one's self a false appearance of creditbility or stature.

The animonsity I see in Old Guard threads is directed towards individuals who pull down their pants and take a big shit on history in order to create a false prestigous "I'm so much better and more real and more special than you".

Well of course the "Old ways" dont exist for the new BDSM?   But there are those that recall them,  as well as the proper steps to full training and that included proper behavior as well as manners.

Of course in Todays BDSM there isnt anything left of manners or discipline.  As it all just seems to be for the sex now?

I disagree. The old ways are the same as the new ways, people were just as promiscuous back then as they are now. It was just much more underground and harder to locate than it is today. I hate it when the people talk about 'the good old days' when all of this was deep dark and meaningful. Its just a bitterness because they are now older and can't pull the young subs they used to.

I would of thought 'Old Ways' could refer to the 1950's type marriage where the woman was just expected to do her duty and where her wedding vows promised to love honour and obey.

So you somehow magically know what people intend when they write their profiles?
If someone is going to refer to himself as an "Old Guard" master I would hope he at least understands what it is he is talking about.  And if he does not, well, people will laugh.

I think that is quite unfair to state that modern BDSM is all about the sex. For some, this is true for others it is a false. There will always be some who have the mindset of  usong the 1950's as a model for their ideal dynamic of respect, discipline and manners of that age. Some are partial to adapting many protocols that was commonly used by the predominantly gay Leathermen. Some are into the high protocol and strict rules and guidelines for the slaves and that is what suits them. You also have a large number who don't want the strictness so they adapt different ideologies and rituals from one or many other areas and modify it to suit them and theirs. One is neither better or worse than the other, they are just different.

It was meant more as a tribute to one of my favorite Doors songs than it was as a literal question.

Yet I can think of three different instances where the "Old Ways" can be used and all are valid

1 - As you stated, the manner of a 1950s way of life.
2 - in reference to the time period of the Gay Leathermen/Old Guard lifestyle
3 - A term used by Wiccans when referring to an era before Europe and North America was Christianize.  The for bearer of the Neo Pagan movement that started several hundred years ago.
