Savage. Cowardly. Despicable. Twelve senseless brutal murders.

No cause or religion can sanction the assassination of unarmed civilians. I pray the wounded make full recoveries.

Let's hope these thugs are caught quickly and put somewhere where the sun doesn't shine for a long long time.

Savage, cowardly and despicable yes. But we don't know for sure they are extremist "muslims", they are masked with no identifiable features. While they may be extremists it could also be the work of people looking to make muslims look bad and fan the flames of hatred. Only time will tell when they are caught.

Just a coincidence that the newspaper that got shot up practiced free speech, and published cartoons critical of Islam then

Yes. I agree with you. There will be plenty of time to allocate blame when those responsible are identified and caught.

It seems that the magazine targetted has been fire bombed in the past, and that French police were guarding some of the staff. Two police are among the dead, according to early reports.

Right

Whats important now, is that we minimize this as much as possible, and work to bury our heads in the sand a little further

No.

What is important is keep calm and level headed. It is best to wait for all the facts to emerge before making judgements.

@Sanity: They publish(ed? yes this might be the end of this publication) political satire of all kinds, not just about islam, but since muslims are a sizeable part of the French population nowadays, there sure have been a bit of that also - as things should be in a country where free press is allowed.

For some time I have been developing an intolerance myself, against people like these who are intolerant and cannot accept living in a society where ideas should be allowed to be openly presented - regardless of how annoying they might seem to be or how much you disagree.
'The prophet have been avenged' they left yelling when they fled.
Will someone avenge the extremists and stand up for the right of free speech?

PEGIDA might be the first sign we might have a counter reaction.

@Sanity: Yep head on, the Islamophobes is the only hope - er yuck cannot even kid about your piece of sarcasm there. :p

Now serious, I am quite unwilling to use the word 'liberal' but in this context it is actually the liberals in Europe who got a large part in causing this problem.
It should have been made very clear for immigrants that while in Rome you should do as romans do - as the saying go.
That as the same time that I will always defend the right for people who have any religion they want, as long as they keep it in their home or church/mosque/temple etc.

And this now appear to lead to a polarization of a kind we see spreading, first in countries that did not have a very bad history of "intolerance", parties and movements popping up like Jobbik in Hungary, the openly fascist party Sverigedemokraterna in Sweden, beating up Romanian beggars in several locations and now Pegida rallies in Germany and Norway.

I am worried, and very much so, since these forces that feed on the discontent of average citizens do not intend to defend the open and tolerant society I prefer, but rather the opposite. But they do get their fuel from a set of very serious mistakes that were done with the arriving immigrants and refugees just some decade ago.

It's not about burying our heads in the sand. This is exactly the kind of thing someone who wants to fan hatred for muslims would do, and judging by your reaction it's working. There is NOTHING that shows who these people are. Maybe they are extremists maybe not. We will know for sure when they're caught, til then I for one refuse to condemn the extremists.

As if extremists are the only ones who want to quash free speech. There is just as much of a chance that this is the work of people looking to fan hatred of muslims as it is extremists themselves. If it is the first group I mention, they are counting on gut reaction rather than people sitting back and thinking before reacting. Looks like it's working. This isn't a liberal vs conservative thing by the way, I'll bet there are some conservatives smart enough to wait til there's more info.

Just as much of a chance? Bullshit.

"I am not afraid of retaliation. I have no kids, no wife, no car, no credit. It perhaps sounds a bit pompous, but I prefer to die standing than living on my knees."

How would the cartoonists want to be remembered? If it was me, I would want my work to outlive every one of those masked cowards.

For Charlie Hebdo...

Ummm that says something about one of the guys who was murdered. It tells us nothing about the guys who murdered him....but rock on. The bit at the bottom of the post says quite a lot about you though, you strike me as exactly the kind of person someone looking to get people inflamed towards muslims would be aiming towards. Again, looks like it worked.

I just read about the hard time Cartoonists have in Turkey -- and in general about the censorship worries of authors around the world.

Islamic Extremists hate free speech.

This will probably accelerate the anti-immigration waves sweeping over Europe.

The fact that they want to quash free speech makes them extremists, regardless of their affiliation.

True but there is nothing to show that they are affilited with muslim extremists.
