So, what exactly does the confederate flag symbolise, in this day and age? It symbolizes all the good things about Southern culture to me. I love the South. I was born here, and I grew up here. Southernors want to preserve our culture, because we see it being eroded. I get a little irritated with the stereotypes we have to endure from the rest of the country. All modern, popular music originated here. Jazz, blues, rock 'n roll, bluegrass, etc, etc. all started here. I think we have the most diverse, fascinating culture and history than any region of the U.S. I love our food, our music, our diversity, our differing colloquial use of languages from state to state, our literature, and our entire way of life. From the deserts of west Texas, to the bayous of Louisiana, to Appalachia....we have one of the most unique cultures in the world. I love that about us, and that is what the Confederate battle flag symbolizes to me. I realize that it has been used by ignorant groups like the Ku Klux Klan to divide people, but so was the ancient swastika. A friend of mine visited India a few years ago and told me that swastikas were everywhere. It's not a symbol of hate. It was just used by evil people for a short period in history. I don't think we should try and erase the symbol from history just because some disgusting vermin used it at one time. The Confederate battle flag was carried into battle by brave men to defend their families, culture, and homes. Only 10% of Southernors owned slaves. It wasn't the defining issue of the American Civil War.
