mixielicous -> religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 9:42:24 AM)

ok, i wanted to put this as a poll, but i am afraid i will not have as good of a reply if i do:

i was wondering, who here is religious? Does it have any affect on your play? As someone who is agnostic [from the very beginning] i feel my spiritual upbringing has left my body more *open* to accept the spirituality which embeds BDSM [for me at least, i never feel so connected to the world, so pure as after a good scene , but who doesnt?]

is there anything in your own specific religous upbringing that made this harder or easier for you to embrace as a life style?

christian, catholic, jewish, mormon, agnostic, wicca, witches, unitarian, protestant, muslim, hindu, gnostic - i want to know how this affects you and your choices, if at all.

if you are not "religious" but more spiritual [agnostic, atheist, wicca etc] do you feel that celebrating your spirituality through mother earth gives you a stronger connection to the spiritual side of BDSM by not having someone elses beliefs chosen as your own?

i ask these questions, and yet are unable to answer them myself. i cannot begin to comprehend the new connections i experience through bdsm as of yet.

I'm not, he's a lapsed Jew.

No.

I don't think doing things through these methods leads one to feel a more or less strong connection with who they are/the spiritual side of ANY part of their lives.

I'm a deeply spiritual person, but there's nothing specifically effected by or towards bdsm for me.  It's just another part of who I am.

mixielicous -> RE: religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 9:54:14 AM)

whats a lapsed jew? Mine is jewish also, and i have come very close to going to temple. "for someone whos not religious" He says, "youre pretty friggn jewish" this always makes me giggle.

Dnomyar -> RE: religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 9:54:21 AM)

What does religion have to do with this. Do jews only take jewish partners. If a Catholic takes a Jewish partner will they both go to hell. This is about people and their kinks not religions and their kinks.

stockingluvr54 -> RE: religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 9:55:15 AM)

Can't really give you any info based on experience (I have very little)....BUT... personally I'm not religous but do believe in a higher power of some kind?.....I reffer to it as God because that's an easy term. Also think that "sinning/taboo" or the thought of it....could play a very erotic part of the "mind fuck" that is important in play....???? jmo.....

i dont understand the point you are trying to make, the OP is directed towards both facets, i am trying to figure out if there is an underlying factor that strengthens or lessens the potential for spirituality in BDSM via a pious upbringing or the opposite.

LOL he was raised Jewish, but fairly reformed, and he really doesn't do anything to express being Jewish except carry a lot of guilt and persecution on his back and celebrate Hannaukah.  His ex-wife was also a shiksa.

Religion can be a very large part of who a person is and how they express themselves and relate to things in the world.

Generally, Jews are supposed to stay with Jews.  Conversion is possible however if a person chooses.

wouldnt [technically] you be one too? i have been called this myself and was under the impression its any gentile woman trying to lure a jewish man from his faith.

szobras -> RE: religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 10:05:10 AM)

For me, my beliefs and their "spiritual principles", are adherent in everything I do in life.
With respect, not something that I choose to discuss in open forum.

Yes and not really. I thank God for allowing me to be with such a wonderful man.

Not really. The whole sex before marriage thing makes me iffy sometimes but other then that no. Hell the Bible has passages about sexual slavery and allowing it.

Baptist for what it counts.

really? would you know where? i dont even know if i have read a single passage in all my life, but i have heard theres some pretty crazy stuff in there and makes for a good read, even when youre not of faith.

angelic -> RE: religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 10:13:16 AM)

i was raised Christian; i have 'fallen from grace' in that regard.  i do strongly believe in Karma.  i do believe my mom is in Heaven and sometimes i wonder if i have shamed her by some of my past acts.

It's Old Testment so if you use it Christians may counter that those rules were thrown out with the coming of Jesus. However, I believe it is Exodus 21, verse 7. I have a list of odd Bible things on my LJ but I don't have a full Bible here to check it (recently moved and my collection of Bibles are still at my folks' house where they are safer). That passage regards selling your daughter into slavery but somewhere there are rules about having a sex slave while married and so on. I'm sure you can find it on Google.

PONYSEEKER -> RE: religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 10:29:55 AM)

I am Christian but not really sure if I could say that I was actually raised that way... was even on my way to becoming a Pastor.

Christianity and BDSM actually complement each other quit well....LOL

ferryman777 -> RE: religion, or lack there of? (3/12/2007 10:48:49 AM)

This has to be a fantastic thread. Pardon my 1 cent worth.
Religon is a contrived belief system, engineered to contol the minds of a people to act according to the agendas of the ruling elite. That is all it is and ever was.
Christianity is contrived, created and based on pre-systems and brought to governmental agenda during the reign of Constatine. Begin your study there.

People have a need to believe in something more than this life; so 'religon's were created, patterns and rules to believe in and follow, dictated by a few self appointed authorities, for the purpose of controlling the masses.

It generates, a control system, whereby the person, themself controls their own actions, inside their own minds; instillation of guilt sensors if not obeying to the rules set forth; ensuring the obedience of the collective group conscience. The rules allow for the excuse of the abuse of power, and the contentment to live in the various degrees of poverty and exploitation by the promise of a better life in the thereafter. The religon provides a venue for the monatary explotation of the masses.

Consider this...when you question the validity of the Christain belief.....how it became so powerful, what black history does it emcompass? ....and just recently...the appointment of a nazi as pope; how real and truthful can it be.

i am a devote Catholic who is at odds with many Church teachings, as most Catholics are.  i find my spiritual and religious life infuses me with joy and enhances my life immeasurably.  Just being a more joyful person makes me a better submissive, IMO.

i see no reason in any Church teaching why i cannot practice D/s and adhere to my religion as i do.  In fact, i think the Church tends to favor a Head of Household role for the husband.

Good question mixie [:D]

I was raised Catholic but have not lived that way for almost 20 years now.
As to whether it had any effect on my choices, I would probably say yes it did, at least for awhile. Once I was aware of it I was able for the most part to step out of that mindset.
I have been studying comparative religion, and evolving in my spiritual beliefs, but have not yet found a good way to completely integrate my current beliefs with my BDSM activities. Some things interact relatively well and others don't.
It's a topic I have been interested in for several years.
Good luck with the responses; I will be watching too!
