Hi everyone, been here a little while but this is my first time posting. And please forgive what I'm sure is the appalling naïvete of my question.

In the context of this site, what is the difference between a submissive and a slave?

Thanks in advance.

People have different perspectives on it, so its really hard to tell at any given time.

Hope that made it clearer for you, and welcome

P.S. Even the way I describe it is different on different days. Todays interpretation is, " A slave is a submissive who is living in a relationship with bdsm overtones"

Thanks for the welcome!

So, a slave is basically an owned submissive?

I'd say a submissive has more say as to what areas of their life is controlled, while a slave is someone who has given ownership of themselves to someone but it really depends on the individuals involved and the situation. No fixed definition.

Okay, I was just wondering about people's reasons (if any) for picking slave or submissive from the drop-down menu when they registered, and if one applied better to me than the other. The site makes it seem like an important distinction?

edit: Oh boy, lots of reading! Thank you Mistrix.

Just out of curiosity, how do you view the two terms as different? Your perception is just as valid as anyone's and fresh blood is so very refreshing. ::chuckles::

Welcome to the Collarme and the forums. :)

Thanks!

I guess my first instinct is that submissive feels more like "someone who submits", whereas my connotations of slave have always meant "someone who is enslaved". Since sexual relationships (presumably!) involve consent, slave could mean someone who consents to being enslaved, and sacrifices more rights than the submissive?

I really don't know, why I asked.

That's a beautiful answer, zenmessenger. It may evolve as you delve deeper into BDSM and you might apply one of those to yourself today.. and a different one tomorrow or something all together different later on, but I do believe that as you search inside yourself, come to truly know yourself, the answers which will satisfy 'you' will speak to your heart and, in the end, those are the only ones which are going to truly matter.

As a newcomer myself, I recently faced the submissive vs. slave question. I went with "submissive." While I like the idea of surrendering control in a scene or sexual context, I'm not at all sure I want someone bossing me around 24/7. So I figured that ruled out "slave."

Nothing is concrete in this lifestlye. Sub and slave have different dynamics and definitions for everyone. Not all slaves live 24/7. Subs can do it also. Both can be collared, owned etc. I identify as a slave and that is because of my definition of a slave. Don't get stuck on labels. Many years ago when I started out I identified as a sub, but over time I wanted something different and was trained as a slave. What " is" for some is not for another.

If you haven't figured it out yet, a good dominant never rewards trouble making behavior. :)
