Books / Non-Fiction:

"Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns..." ~ great read if you are new, regardless of your station, easy to read, fun to go thorugh, LOTS of info.

"The Topping Book" ~ I have heard a LOT of great things about it.

Those are the 2 best books, I know of for a Top-type person. As for learning, brouse the boards on here, look for sites that match your interests, talk to people who you find intersting from the boards, if you are a social butterfly, then check out your local munch, or if you prefer online learning, check out a few groups on yahoo or on myspace. Lots and lots of resources, just look around.

As someone with more than a bit of experience in and out of the scene as well as being fairly well read, I really cannot much recomend the early gay leatherman books. Many were adapted from early magazines and the chapters cover a subject like humiliation in 1 1/2 pages, not exactly much depth. I realize that is not a popular view but it is certainly mine.

Dossie Easton's stuff is wonderful and I recomend anything she has ever written.

Screw the Roses is great for technique, especially for introducing a vanilla lover to kink and it has a couple of nuggets of great D/s although few recognize them.

I have to admit, Midori's new book stunned me for its depth of thought, utter lack of pretense, and clear presentation. I think it will rise above The Bottoming Book as a first read.

Thanx to everyone who responded. You have suggested enough reading to keep me busy for a wile. I was curious how many out there was able to transition into a master/slave dynamic after reading and studing about it as opposed to having it showed to them?

IMHO...
if you are trying to add an element of M/s to your life, the books are as good a place to start as any. Read, research, try, read some more.
And ask questions of whatever peer group you can find. CM is a good place as well as groups local to your area.

I don't believe you need someone to "show" you, you have to find the dynamic in yourself and explore it.

As you read, you will find as many versions and intrepretations of BDSM, M/s, pick your initials, as there are people.
My version of an M/s dynamic is different that yours, or anyones for that matter. That is one of the things I like about reading the posts here. It's all different, and what works for one person may not work for me, or it may just spark something I've never considered.

That being said... look in yourself to see what makes sense to you, talk to your partner and see what works for them and develop your own style, but never stop learning and exploring. I've been doing this in one form or another for 20 some odd years and the past 10 with my girl/slave/wife, and I never stop looking, reading and trying to find new things.

I liked SM101 it's not very provoactive but it should keep you from making mistakes you look back and regret.
